FYI: Samsung Dex can be outputted from a phone to a monitor simply via a USB C cable. (It also works wirelessly but it has a bit of latency which is manageable for basic tasks really). I moved from an iPhone to a Fold and I love Dex a lot.

Tbh I think the low RAM in iPhones could be a real problem in this situation

Funny thing is A14 already has significantly better single-core performance compared to last year's Intel/AMD laptop CPUs. And its multi-core performance is okay as well. So not just lightweight tasks but even Xcode would work pretty well on an A14. In fact it is already proven with the developer Mac Mini with A12Z chips, that even A series chips are quite powerful. I think this will eventually happen for iPhones but I don't know when Apple will do it, maybe 10 years later... By the way, Windows Phone users would know, you could connect Windows Phone's to an external monitor via their USB-C port and it would turn the phone into a touchpad and the monitor would have an ARM version of Windows 10 running on it. It wasn't able to run the legacy Win32 apps on it yet, but you were able to run all modern Windows 10 apps on it, so it was already very useful.

Apple won’t because. They want it to be separate devices.

I hope this happens at some point! It would be cool to be able to power a portable display from your phone only and have macOS but I feel like the battery couldn't handle something like that currently. It would be cool if aside from just connecting via a cable, dock or wireless to a monitor if they had an Apple iMac like a display that you could slot your iPhone into so you could take advantage of Face ID, same with a laptop form factor. Maybe they could use the screen as a trackpad like some phones have.

Sounds great but battery lifespan would suck pushing it that hard. Wonder if we would get to see solid state batteries on an iPhone some day.

I would love that. Linux phones have proved this is very possible. Few people know that Ubuntu did this before Microsoft and Samsung. It is still something you can do on Linux phones. Plug it in and get desktop Linux. These phones do it with worse than midrange phone specs. The iPhone would run way faster, and get a lot done.

This got me thinking about how would you get data in a port less iPhones? MagSafe to C dongle? They’d have to figure out how to use MagSafe with at least usb 2 speeds or just put 4 gold contacts on the back as a port

But Apple loves the environment, didn't they left out the charger for it? Lol

The idea is great and I‘m in love with it since years. But they clearly can‘t do it with a lightning dock.
Because fun fact: lightning can‘t give out a direct video signal. Because of that they film the IPhones screen give that as a USB signal to a separat chip in the hdmi dongle which converts that into a hdmi signal. Therefor the latency through lightning is really unusable.

I literally suggested this on the Apple Support website, this would be awesome

Because, people like me, have to buy a macbook to get full screen and 2-4 windows up to multitask. If they let me get a few word and excel docs in full screen I wouldn’t need my MacBook, I’d just use my phone.
I have a iPad for laying in bed and travel, sometimes use for showing students photos.
I have all 3 cause of different needs. If the let me do all, well macbook would go. I don’t actually need their laptop anymore since all the devices have screens, can connect to Bluetooth keyboards, and can deal with bars on the screen when at my workplace. I literally only use now to get a few windows open to work and the mild annoyance of non full screen view when consuming media.

Yes yes yes, I talked on my channel about this idea. Dex features is the ONLY feature i ask Apple to copy from Samsung. The iPhone will be the only computer for more people, there are already a lot people who aren’t using any computing device other than the iPhone.

In 2006 I told my coworker that, “one day we’ll dock our phone to a keyboard, mouse, and monitor and it will be our computer.” I’ve wanted a non-android phone (Windows or Mac) that could do that ever since. Microsoft did it for one model year of phone. Sad it didn’t last.

Ever since the Motorola Atrix 4G back in the days had its lap dock I have wanted a phone that could be your computer. You get to work, you dock your phone and when you get home you can dock the phone to watch tv or play games.

Build different profiles into the phone for work and home for the separate work spaces.

I’m not saying I’m in favor of this, but Apple could make you pay a monthly subscription for the dex knock-off to make it more profitable
