Everyone loves garlic, and this is Monaro Purple, you can grow it in the garden, if you haven't got a garden you can also grow it in a container. Thats what this vides all about, growing garlic in containers.
this is the container that we are going to plant the garlic into, it has got a good quality potting mix, its got a little bit of compost mixed in, its also got a handful of lime. Garlic likes sweet soil it grow better like that.
This is the head of garlic that we are going to divide up into individual cloves. Try to keep as much of the base plate attached to clove as possible, and don't worry about removing the papery outsides. We will show you what it looks like.
We have divided that up, we have git 9 good sized cloves and four smaller cloves, we will plant the smaller ones somewhere else in the garden. But the nine big cloves we are going to try and fit into the pot.
This is a single clove and we are going to plant that about 5cm deep. We will space them out in the pot just to show you haw many you can get in.
Ideally we would plant our garlic about 15cm apart we are going to squash them in a little bit closer in this pot we think that they will grow OK.
We are going to plant them at about 5cm deep, twice the size of the clove. We will just go through this process now.We are going to use a dibbler, make the hole and put in the garlic, thats done, now we will do the rest of them.
Pointy end up please. The garlic are all planted, we just need to backfill, water in and we are done.
We will show you the progress as the sprouts come up, and we will show you what to do to keep your garlic really healthy and make the cloves grow as big as possible.
Hear we have our garlic about two weeks after planting, looking great.
Ongoing care, all you really need to do is to watch out for scapes, or flower heads, when these appear cut them off by removing them you will find that you get bigger garlic cloves. You can use a little fertiliser through the season, use a low nitrogen one, that will encourage bigger cloves, without excessive leaf growth.
