The Real Reason NO ONE Wanted Patrick Mahomes in High School

Do you ever wonder how no school outside the state of Texas even offered Patrick Mahomes a scholarship coming out of high school? Or, how about the two biggest schools in Texas opting to skip out on the future Super Bowl champion? No one, not Nick Saban, Dabo Swinney, whatever great college coach and great recruiting staff you can think of… just about all of them couldn’t see the potential in the quarterback who has now taken over the NFL. And schools that should, in theory, rule over the Texas recruiting scene like Texas and Texas A&M, well, they struck out even harder.

There is a reason for all this. And in this video, we’re gonna dive into Patrick Mahomes’ crazy lack of interest in his high school recruiting journey.

I'd like to personally thank all the teams that passed on Mahomes. The turnaround that the Chiefs have made since drafting him is unbelievable, and I'm loving every minute of it! 😎

His lack of recruiting interest is pretty damn wild. It did not take him very long to start making unbelievable plays on the field as a true freshman at Texas Tech, despite the fact we were told by the recruiting services that he was a 3-star dude who would need a bunch of development as a bench-warmer. His talent was heavily underestimated.

I’ve seen so many talented superstar Highschool/college players get absolutely screwed over from horrible coaches to horrible politics to horrible moments of wrong place wrong time. It’s unfair. But that’s life.

He is definitely a generational type quarterback and will eventually rewrite history at his position!

The reason why is Mahomes' style and skill set. When you first look at him, you think he is going to get you into trouble, then you start to think he gets lucky a lot, then you realize it isn't luck. We went through this at Tech and laughed when NFL pendants down played Mahomes, knowing full well they would be won over in a year or two. Scouts don't take long looks, so a lot of coaches were stuck in the 1st phase. It is important to note that Kingsburry was not real high on Mahomes early on either. Mahomes started as a true FR because Davis Webb got injured and Baker Mayfield transferred. There is a clip/photo of KK & his staff's' reaction to Mahomes' 1st play, that was a disaster. By the end of the season, people were happy & by the end of the next season, people used Mahomes to talk about Kingsburry as the QB guru.

He's not the only one that has great potentials but was overlooked. There's a reason for that, but regardless of those early years he has come a long way, and shown his haters that not just that he has potentials, he's very talented, and smarter than most of his haters who talked trash about him at every turn. 💯🤴

Thank you. After watching your video I feel that there can be little doubt that his diverse sports experience when growing up greatly helped him develop the skills he has today.

A couple of observations. He owes a lot of his overall success to the encouragement of his family. Seems they understood that it's important to see beyond the frustration of the day and sticking to it.
Also, Patrick is fortunate that the Bears overlooked him. They had the same problem selecting talent in other positions, as well as management. He likely would have never seen the success in Chicago that he has in Kansas City.

Mahomes had a stellar college career. In fact, he sent Baker Mayfield packing to Oklahoma. Yet Baker was the first pick in the draft. The two draft pundits on ESPN said that “Arm strength is overrated.” when referring to Mahomes. A blind man could see that he was a generational talent. Pat Mahomes, Russell Wilson, Lamar Jackson all were drafted below where their talent dictated. They lead their teams to 5 Super Bowls and produced multiple MVPs. Hmm! Why were these players drafted below where their talent dictated!

He did have some other offers. He wanted to play baseball in college as well. This turned most schools away since they believed that he was going to be a baseball player anyway. He was on the baseball team as a freshman but it was obvious that he was better in football.

If Patrick went to a playoff contending team in college, those coaches would’ve forced Patrick to change his style. Texas tech with kliff was the best thing to ever happen to him. Maybe next time being a father...

Someone asked Glen Campbell if he could read music( he was, after all, a renowned studio player) He said " Not enough to hurt me" Same parallel with Pat's lack of having a pitching coach interfere with his natural ability!

Reminds me of Joe Burrow as far as being overlooked...and could not get an offer from Nebraska even with the history of his dad and brother having played there. So, it seems getting overlooked is not unusual for QBs who go on to greatness.
