The questions: why did no one (Especially Cara Dune, a Rebel/New Republic Special Forces Drop Trooper!) Recognize him?

IMPORTANT NOTE: Luke's name is never spoken during the entire series. When he arrives, he never introduces himself.

I have taken the liberty of rewatching the last episode and transcribing ALL of Luke's Dialogue:
"I am [a Jedi]."
"Come little one, "
"He wants your permission. He is strong in the Force, but he will not be safe until he masters his abilities."
"May the Force be with you."

"A farm boy, a normal person like you too can save the galaxy" is a better recruitment message than "we only defeated the Empire because Darth Vader and his super space wizard son betrayed the Emperor."

The only one that knew who Luke was, that was on the bridge, was Moff Gideon. He recognized him on the screen and almost crapped himself. He knew of the Jedi that destroyed the Empire and took out Vader and the Emperor as well as the first Death Star. He knew because it was his job to know.

Cara didn't recognize Luke because she has never watched the Star Wars movies.

"Nobody in the room recognized Luke". Except for Moff Gideon. The look on his face said it all.

Me thinking: If nobody knew about Luke killing the emperor, how did Rey in the sequels know about it?

My answer: Disney doesn’t know what they’re doing.

They just didn’t want people to know Luke was coming in Season 2.

I'd imagine Luke wouldn't publicize his actions. For one, he's not a guy to brag. For another, if everyone loyal to the Emperor knew Luke was responsible... there'd probably be a big target on his back bigger than the Last Jedi's plot holes. The rebels just expended all their efforts on destroying the Death Star. The last thing they needed was to play body guard for the old religious wizard monk cult that caused the Clone Wars, the Empire, and the Civil War in the first place. I don't think the average galactic citizen would know much about the Sith considering A: The Jedi told almost no one about them up until their eradication, and B: The Empire most likely would have painted them in a very bad light for the last 30 years. And who would know Luke was responsible and not just the destruction of the Death Star 2 unless he told people? Unless there was a live stream in the Emperor's Throne room. Emperor playing twitch, "About to make my apprentice and his son fight to the death. Sick af! Donate for Death Star 3! Let's keep it going, people!"

The religion of the "force" was downplayed by the Empire throughout its reign - I still remember that commander dissing Vader's "faith" and subsequently being "force-choked" by the man in black. Your explanation for Cara not recognizing Luke makes a lot of sense.

Honestly that’s what bothers me. Luke spends 10 years looking for Jedi artifacts, he starts looking for students, and then he finally trains his nephew. All of that just for it to be destroyed five years later. It just makes all of Luke Skywalker‘s Journey pointless. I don’t mean to sound negative at all. I just prefer Luke from the legends because that Jedi order was more successful.

Short answer: cara dune knows Luke, doesn’t know he’s a Jedi.

Makes sense. The Empire would have done everything it could to ensure everyone knew how the Jedi allegedly betrayed the Republic, attacked Palpatine, and were going to overthrow the government. Even after the Empire was revealed to be rotten to the core, the people still had no faith in the Jedi. Where were they? Dead? They couldn't stop the Empire anyway, why would they put any faith in them at that point? The Rebels chose wisely to keep the knowledge about Luke being a Jedi on the low. It's easier to relate to a hero rising up after his family was slaughtered by the Empire than some weird mystic with special powers that nobody really understands.

Having been in the military for 6 years, I can tell you that grunts and fighter pilots do not hang out as a rule. The US military is HUGE and imagining a galaxy spanning one is mind boggling logistically to me. This video pointed out some great reasons in cannon as well. Also, I never once see someone recording something for posterity so maybe no one knows what Luke looks like now. I am not sure people could identify me now from my High School photo :p

A century later, everybody has heard of the Red Baron, almost no one knows his real name or could identify him from a picture.

There is actually a theory that it is a separate timeline, it focuses around ashoka living and grogu being an apprentice that Luke didn’t have in the other timeline, because he would have been captured by the first order and palpatine would use his blood to create snoke

I dont know what everyone is on about. Cara did recognize Luke. Watch that scene again. Besides Luke, Grogu and Jin, There is only one other closeup in the whole sequence (after Luke enters the room). And that close up is on Cara's face. This editing choice was intentional . Expression on her face was intentional. Did people expect for her to say "o my god that is luke skaywalker" ? That was not the time to do that. Yes she might know him as Luke Skywalker the pilot and not Luke the Jedi. But She did know who he was.

"Taking Grogu changes the course of history and he starts his jedi temple early." Good. The sooner we can remove the sequel abominations from the collective world, the better.

Throughout the original trilogy all of the actual events related to the sky walker family and the Jedi knights and the force were never seen or know. About by anyone else’s but the fans watching the films. That’s what makes the mando series so good is because it utilizes this as a main story telling method. Pure genius !
