SUMMARY
--------------------

After reviewing this video, you'll know exactly why they didn't hire you. The sad truth is, it probably wasn't your fault. But, it is your problem!

The goal here is to help you understand the actual reasons you get the job (or have interview success).

Once you understand the three--often-undetectable--reasons you ultimately get the job, you'll be more prepared for next interview.

Mistake Alert: Most people think they get a job because of their qualifications. In doing so, they expend so much energy in the interview focusing on their experience.

You get a job interview because of your qualifications. You get the job for three reasons, none of which are your qualifications.

Why do you get the job? Based on my observation from thousands of interviews between my clients (the hiring companies) and job candidates (prospective employees), I've concluded a candidate's attainment of the job is largely contingent on three often-undetectable success factors:

- The candidate's ability to effectively articulate his or her qualifications and potential contributions (encoding)
- The interviewer's ability to accurately interpret the candidate's qualifications (decoding)
- The interviewer's capacity to remember the candidate (memory)

The reality is you have a greater chance of failing the interview because of a misrepresentation or misinterpretation than you do a lack of qualification.

Action: After you review the video, think about your previous interviews (or exchanges with coworkers) and consider where you had these communication breakdowns. What could you have done differently?

Up Next! In the next lesson, How to Tell Great Stories, I'll help you overcome these communication gaps. You'll learn the five key characteristics of every great story that makes you likeable, believable, and memorable to the employer. See you in a day or so!

1. Relate your skills to the job, tell your story in a way that builds a connection between yourself and the company.
2. Communicate in a way that is clear, so that regardless if the recruiter is having a bad day or if there's distractions, what you say will be absorbed and interpreted properly by the interviewer.
3. Be Memorable. Leave enough of an impression that they remember you when the job-hiring decision is happening after the interview.

Best way to get a job is being authentic.
I once told an interviewer I didn't know how to use a specific software that was required to perform my specific role and I still got the job. Specifically, I said "I don't have a lot of experience with software X, but I'm the type of person who is willing to put in the time to figure it out."

That's discouraging. You can say everything perfectly (which happens how often???), but the employer still might not get your point ;D Amazing!

I have an internal interview tomorrow, I’m always nervous about interviews. I’ve actually a decent amount of phone Interviews and call backs but I am an introvert and I get nervous a lot in social situations. It’s mainly when I’m out on the spot at any other time I’m relatively social and like being around people lol. I’m just trying to actually land a better position within my company. Your videos are really helping me to have less anxiety about the entire interview process but I’m still nervous, of course the more I prepare the better off I will be...so thank you for taking the time to make these great videos!!

Last week I had a second interview and didn't get hired. I don't know why. I was told by a secretary that they weren't ready to hire but she feels that I am a good fit and she wants to keep my resume. It was disappointing.

i can score interviews, but never ever get a job. i’ve been told i had a job before, but they just never ended up calling me back. i’ve been struggling to get a job for over a year now. i think i know why i can’t get a job, and it’s because i have a very minor disability to my hand.

a hiring manager once asked me why i think i can’t get a job, and i told her that it’s because of my hand and she told me they hire people with disabilities and told me i’m perfect for the job, but i never got it

it’s so frustrating since i need a minimum of 2 years of customer service experience for my future job after high school!!
