Coronavirus Pandemic Update 103: Convalescent Plasma Treatment & the FDA; College Campuses Close

Показать описание
Convalescent Plasma Treatment for COVID 19 has been widespread in the US. Following infection, many patients have donated their plasma containing SARS-CoV-2 antibodies to try to help patients with severe symptoms fight COVID-19. The big news today is that the emergency approval from the FDA for the use of plasma treatment is now on hold based on a lack of robust data that demonstrates efficacy. Dr. Seheult also discusses COVID 19 in India, Brazil, North Carolina, and college campuses that have experienced coronavirus outbreaks since resuming in-person classes
(This video was recorded August 20, 2020).

This would be shameful if the fda stopped the use of convalescent plasma. My friend’s son received it and is back to work. Has Dr Fauci come to hospitals treating bad covid patients to see what the hospital personnel have to do to keep people alive? In other words, he needs to get into the trenches.

Many thanks for being such a leader in your domain and steering people and institutions towards possible cures. We should always keep an open mind and look for additional data to confirm the theory and not censure or block information or tests or new ways to do things. Innovators like you need strong support from the whole community and I can assure you that you have my full support. Salutations de Montréal.

I cannot imagine this doctor's frustration with decisions from above that tie his hands while trying to assist his critical patients

If you’re sick on a ventilator, you don’t have the luxury of time to wait for randomized, placebo-controlled trial results to guide your treatment decisions.

Treatment delayed is treatment denied. And if it’s a treatment that can save your life, how is that in any way ethical?

The decision should be made by the patient, in consultation with their physician, not someone in Washington.

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure... Still holds true.

The issue of use of plasma within 3 days is a major one. Many medical groups will now confirm a diagnosis of covid and then send the patient home for a week or two, until they exhibit breathing difficulties, etc. If the plasma works best early, especially for old people, then many medical groups will need to change their normal procedures for treating covid. A change toward early treatment with plasma, for older patients, might provide some momentum for the early use of other treatments, such as Ivermectin, etc. rather than continuing the current "wait and see what develops" routine.

Team Medcram = convalescent plasma has been a remedy for a long time. Why banish some people to a control group (deny them treatment)? The Mayo Clinc did the right thing.

Tools that are not overtly harmful SHOULD NOT be taken away from patients. Convalescent Plasma treatment should be allowed. Patients and doctors need all of the tools they can get. FDA, reconsider your decision. Lives depend on it.

The heads of FDA, NIH and CDC should volunteer for the control group, IMHO.

Initially, it was HCQ and now plasma treatment.

Begging the question, what the heck is going on at the FDA?

Dr Scheult - the study on plasma shows how you can take good data and destroy it using levels. The S/Co ratio should be used as a number for each case providing a continuous variable rather than breaking it into three levels. Time should have been recorded as days from diagnosis (many levels even though not continuous) rather than broken into two groups. The use of a continuous variables precludes the need for a control - the significance of the trend can be evaluated independent of any control population. Showing that the highest vs the lowest is statistically significant is impossible without a control population - but showing the trend is statistically significant for a continuous variable is possible. The data was there and was taken and then discarded - as a result a good treatment may be mistakenly abandoned.

This type of thing sounds like grounds for a few class-action lawsuits. And yes, you can sue a government agency and win.

Makes me sick to my stomach to even hear their names. Their disregard for human life is abhorrent

I think the results of converesent plasma will improve if you use the plasma that work. In Thailand at Chulalongkorn Hospital, we can test not only antibody to SARCOV 2 but we can test for neutralizing antibody too.
Not all antibody will work against covid19.
And I surprised that why in the researcher didn't test antibody beforehand cause all converesent plasma is not the same. So it is so difficult to interpret the results.
In Thailand, we use converesent plasma since March. But seldom use it now because we don't have a lot of case. We screen early, quarantine, treat early and aggressively with antiviral such as Favifiravir.
So we don't have new death for~ 2 months now.(Our new cases mostly asymtomatic). And don't have new case in community for 90 days. Our new cases all are imported.
