I did hear an interesting theory that Maegor really did start out with good but harsh intentions and wanted to protect his family from the threat of killing them all. But what really set in his descent for blood and murder was his coma, he almost died from a wound to the head. It's very likely that his head trauma caused a personality change and if it wasn't that, Tyana's magic may have. It was only after her interference that he suddenly got better. He may have even died at one point and Tyana brought him back in some way, but left him with only anger amd brutality.

Isn’t Maegor akin to Henry VIII where he wasn’t a great guy but became a terrible guy after an injury

His major mistake was taking Tyanna of Pentos as his concubine. Yeah she likely brought him back to life but it poisoned his seed.

I think he took the throne as an act of saving him self and his family rather than because he was just purely cruel and mad. If you look at the situation from his view it makes sense.

Maegor may been cruel but at least not “unworthy”…

He could have just fought to free the heir instead of killing him, and then helped him right things. Setting a precedent of violence over succession is not good for long term stability

Maegor was clearly designed by GRRM to be one of the worst kings ever, but the fandom for some reason will twist itself in all kinds of pretzels in order to argue that he actually wasn't that bad and was just what the Targaryen family (most of whom he killed) needed.

Maegor case kinda lost all meaning when killing his own family all he had to do named aegon his heir in case he get any children.

Maegor rode Balerion. He had the sword. Aegon was dragonless when Maegor took the throne so really, he was right to crush the faith of the seven. But what he did to his family was beyond justification.

It was necessary and justified
If you actually look at it from another perspective, you can see that Aenys and Viserys do have some similarities in common. They both reject their brothers who have violent reputations, but who are very useful and capable of doing the dirty work that needs to be done. They both allow things to grow with no repercussions and it’s caused internal strife or it’s caused severe problems externally.

Honestly, I’m a Maegor apologist too. Don’t get me wrong he was excessively cruel and I hate what he did to young Aegon. But like grease goblins is saying, if another weak, soft king would have taken the throne, the Targaryens would have been overthrown right then and there. He was like a necessary evil. Literally.

Stupid sexy Maegor. But honestly it seems like Aenys was in fact overthrown so his descendants didn’t necessary have the right to the Iron Throne. Maegor won it back through rights of conquest just like Robert did.
