How to Tell if Your Kombucha Has Vinegar Eels

To avoid having vinegar eels, if you use vinegar, only use distilled white vinegar, NEVER use apple cider vinegar.

It may seem gross, but they are completely harmless :) I cultivate them to feed to my betta fish fry (that are so tiny that a few vinegar eels would be considered a full meal, and they love it!) it was super gross to me when I first started cultivating me, but over time I've fully accepted them. They're actually present when apple cider vinegar is made and they feed off the mother of vinegar. The reason you don't see it in store-bought vinegar is because it's pasteurized! You could try pasteurizing your kombucha as well to get rid of them, though it may also kill off some beneficial bacteria. Sorry for sounding gross, but that looks like an extremely well off culture of eels, and it makes me wonder if I should switch to kombucha for them. How long did it take you to make that kombucha?

Kombucha should never be started or continued with acv anyway or any other vinegar for that matter

😳WOW that's bad. Thanks for the closeup. I also didn't get enough starter with my first scoby and am in the process of making a half gallon batch but need to get a heater so I can get it to ferment properly. I'm fixing to go look at my strange stuff real close because I don't think it's working quite right.

I came to this video looking to culture vinegar eels for fish fry. Miss zero waste lady, culture the eels and sell them to fish nerds and pet shops. waste not want not.

Someone please help meeee! I can't get rid of vinegar The first time I made kombucha it got infested with vinegar eels because I used apple cider vinegar, HUGE MISTAKE. I learned from it and threw the whole batch. I made a 2nd batch and this time i made sure I cleaned everything, I literally sterilized everything and I also used a whole new scoby that I bought. And I still ended up with vinegar eels! Honestly, I have spent too much money and I'm not sure what to do. Pls help

The only way you get vinegar eels in your kombucha is by adding apple cider vinegar to it.

If you need to drop pH, only add unpasteurized, unflavored kombucha to it, or use a bit of DISTILLED white vinegar (it is pasteurized, so no chance of getting vinegar eels with it).

Put an air-lock on for a few days and they will suffocate.. :)
