I bought an Irwin set that had several common bits and sizes in it to start off with, all the while knowing I will be upgrading to Whiteside when I get more proficient at things. :)

I bought a couple cheap bits and they cut rough. Then I thought I'd get a better set and went MCLS. They were okay, but not that great. Then I found out about something called an undersized router bit. They are made for making slots for plywood which is always undersized. The only place I could find them was Whiteside. OMG... they just cut so much cleaner. Way less tear out. I will be replacing all my other bits with Whiteside as I can afford them. They start at about 30 bucks each... but soooo worth it. Unless you like sanding to clean up the tear out and losing the fancy part of the edge you just routered.

I’ve used some of the good router bits and they burn up, what could be the reason? I’m using a ryobi plunger router. Could that be it? Do I need a new one that takes thicker shanks? It’s driving me crazy because I’m trying to get these bits that are meant for jointers and they just keep burning up.

Don’t cheap out on any bits… Brad bits Forstner bits… sandpaper either
