if you are cutting thick material then the pattern bit is best because you can make multiple passes that would otherwise cause a lot of pressure on the workpiece..the first pass is also the one that most likely will cause tearout on the surface, but with a starting shallow pass you car significantly reduce this problem. Imagine like cutting thick wood with a circular saw..a few passes at one inch is less likely to burn and ruin the blade than one pass at three inches..also with a pattern bit you can cut pockets that would otherwise be impossible with the other two style of flush trim bits

can a bearing be put on any type of bit? also, can a bearing be put on top or bottom of any bit if i was to buy a bearing kit? lastly, can you discuss template thickness and how to determine that? Im routing 1 inch deep dato into 1-1/2 thick wood with 1-1/8 diameter template bit. i have to make a few passes to get to the 1 inch depth so if the template was thin, wouldnt the bearing have nothing to ride on? how do you solve this?

hi - im looking for a trim bit that cuts a flange or lip on bottom - so the bearing is at the top, im trimming plastic formed items - an alphabet letter that needs a flange on it when cut out to it can be glued on a flat surface and look like a 3d letter afterwards - looked everywhere - so imagine a non flush trim bit with a smaller diameter shaft than the top bearing - thanks
