Just raise the numbers to the respective powers, add together, divide by 2, and take the square root of the result. Equal 169. Why go to all that work?

Very nice solution in a difficult exercise !!!!
You can avoid Newton's bionomial by using : a²+b²=(a+b)²-2ab.
x⁴+y⁴+(x+y)⁴=(x² +y²)² -2x²y² +(x+y)⁴
=[(x+y)² -2xy]² -2x²y² +(x+y)²
=(x+y)⁴ - 2(x+y)² ⋅2xy+4x²y² -2x²y² +(x+y)⁴
=2[(x+y)⁴- 2(x+y)² xy+x² y²]
=2[(x+y²)-xy]²
