A novella called, A Colder War, by Charles Stross, delved into the very subject above. It's available online and is an excellent story. Would make the perfect sequel if they ever made a movie out of Lovecraft's original story, At the Mountains of Madness.

the sanity part is just... wrong- none of the other gods have the ability to instantly make someone go mad just because they look at them. sure, they can make someone go insane if they try, basically anyone can, but that doesn't mean by just looking at them makes you go insane.
