I hate the hierarchical aspect of the Japanese work culture that’s not based on skill and objectivity. Other than that, I love Japan. I will never live there but I will visit for as long as I can.

Yes it so annoying. My vice president wanted to ask me something, literally in office right behind my desk. She calls my supervisor and has her tell me. I just said I heard her when she told you to ask me. No

I also heard they don’t take foreigners seriously
Japanese companies don’t value other peoples opinion at all
It’s all about hierarchy and that’s it
Who ever worked the longest is the highest

Not true where I work, but the part about not treating their employees like adults, absolutely. Both on company level and manager level, but of course depends

I live and work in Japan and do not have this issue... I can take my work laptop with me anywhere. As far as my company is concerned, the laptop is mine as long as I am at the company or until I need a new one.

It's the same thing with some companies honestly. You needed clearance before taking a work laptop before bringing them elsewhere. It's not an isolated case in Japan, amd mostly a company to company basis.

Going by some of the comments by people who live in Japan this seems to be something that varies between companies with some being a lot more reasonable

Most US companies wouldn’t let employees work in another country if it wasn’t for official business. The people that move abroad without letting their jobs know eventually get fired

As a cybersecurity engineer I can tell it’s not specific to Japan and for obvious cybersecurity reason a lot of companies worldwide apply the same kind of process

It also could be due to country based vpn permissions that need to be adjusted while your out of the country and that requires approval. Google doesnt need it due to having a global presence however if your at a smaller company it may not be allowed through the companies firewall or the country may be blocked on the vpn making it not function at all.

Oh, I'm in the US and we have to get approved to take work equipment on trips/out of office. But usually just your manager and the security team. But not HR, they're just there to approve the fact you're going on a trip lol

it's not japanese culture. That's how companies work everywhere. The laptop technically belongs to the company. There are people who work abroad for months at a time and it creates taxation challenges

Literally bottom level operator ar my tech company and took on a project to monitor air stats in the clean rooms. Needed all kinda of sensors to build a detection grid, common stuff like o2 monitors to emergency chemcal detectors, not cheap stuff. Didnt even have final design plans, just put in the order and they overnighted everything. Logged overtime at my own will and designed it at my home. Few months later teams of people were finalizing my project for implementation.

For me to take my laptop to work trip or work from home, I just need to fill one form with the dates and send it to the general affairs person of my office. I didn't expect it would be this easy in japan, but at least at my department they are pretty chill

She works at a clinic and the laptop has the patients charts.

Im being ironic, but each office has its own restrictions and I bet this is not just in japan, and everyone knows google is quirky with their employees behavior… not how normal usa companies behave.

I love your information and videos of Japan.

Im American. Where I previously worked, I'd have to get lots of approvals to take laptop out of usa.

Thats not Japanese culture. That's just your typical corporate bureaucracy.

If I want to take my work laptop out of the country, or out of work even, I would need to get a laptop approved. Working there for 8 years.
