Here in Paraguay I went to leave my backpack at the entrance where the employees watch your stuff, handed it to the lady and she said "this is heavy, you got a laptop in there?" And I said yes because I had my laptop I use in college and she looked at me with a worried look and said "Oh, just keep it then, it's ok" and they let me in with my backpack💀💀💀 Supermarkets don't even trust themselves with your stuff here lmao

In Austria we go in with backpacks, pack them full, unpack them at cashier, and pack up again after paying 😅😅 once i forgot a little thing inside and went back the next day to pay for it.

At my local stores, only teenagers have to leave their backpacks in a box with a magnetic lock on it which is pretty weird since anyone can steal.

In Nigeria, backpacks are also not allowed in the supermarket. You put it in a locker and they give you a token

meanwhile in switzerland most shops give you the option to take a barcode reader with you while shopping, so you can scan any item as soon as you take it off the shelf. just directly put it in your bag, head for the self checkout and the scanner will transmit the cost of what you bought. no need to mess around and separately scan every item at the register. way more convenient and faster.

In the Us you can find both. A lot of smaller stores want you to leave your backpack at the counter or with a friend outside. While larger stores usually aren't too bothered by its presence but you know there's at least one camera you probably can't see looking down every aisle.

In Mexico you cannot enter the supermarket with a big bag or a backpack because they also think you might steal something. And if you enter with your umbrella, for example, you have to ask the security guard to mark as "client's property" so when you exit, they know that the umbrella was not stolen.

I actually put the stuff I want to buy into my backpack while shopping in the supermarket, so that I can measure the exact amount of stuff that fits into it without me having to buy an extra bag or having to carry anything home. When getting to the checkout I just take it out and put it in front of the cashier. Pretty normal here. Nobody in Germany ever commented or raised a fuss 😊

When I was a teenager, my local Dutch supermarket banned high school students from taking their bags inside. But we had no lockers so you'd have to just leave your bag at the front of the store and hope no one stole your stuff. I still don't know what the purpose of that rule was, but at least it stopped the many bored teenagers from hanging out in the supermarket

in Germany you can even use your backpack to collect items in the store as long as you put every thing back out at the cashier. it is not stealing until you leave the store without paying

If I am known in the store - i.e., a regular shopper, I do use my bags and hang them from the handles of my walker or put them on the seat. It does help keep stuff from falling off my walker, I know how many bags they need to credit me for and I can put refrigerator and frozen foods right in an insulated bag. I put everything on the line to be scanned and paid for, then repack it in my bags. One grocery store will even introduce me to new employees and let them know I will pay for everything "so you can concentrate on watching someone who may actually steal!". He will often say they can help me reach stuff if they see me struggling. It's kind of cool being trusted. Almost like being Norm on Cheers!

There was once a time when the supermarket or hypermarket were super strict to tie our bag zips so we cannot put things in it or we have to leave it at the counter. Now they let us roam freely without tying our bag anymore. I guess they got tired.😂

We have a 7-11 in a high crime city that wants you to leave your pack at the front of the store, no lockers. I'm like, it's a full pack, more could be stolen from me than I could possibly steal from the store. Plus they have cameras for that. I just ignore it because it's impractical, and of course weird.

In Ecuador, if you go to the supermarket you have to put everything in a locker
However, if every locker is in use, tough luck, you'll have to wait until someone is done

In the UK we fill up the bag with grocery items and walk out (M&S)

Scanned & paid on the phone.
