Why You Need Therapy

Mental health is extremely important. So why don't we take care of it that much? Excellent question! The world of therapy and counseling can seem scary. Most people have never been to some form of mental health counseling. Therapists can be extremely helpful for people recovering from illnesses and disorders, but we hardly ever think of them for everyday life. However, as you'll see in the video, that's just plain wrong. Find out why you, too, need a therapist.

I failed to mention a very important point that a commenter pointed out. 9% of Americans are not insured. Unless they are able to pay exorbitant amounts of money, 29 million people are excluded from receiving appropriate physical and mental health services. Typically, the people who are in this situation are already underserved and/or battling financial crises. And even those who are covered by insurance may have difficulty accessing mental health services if they live in a rural area or can't afford their deductible. This is a topic that requires heightened exposure and more solutions, and I plan on approaching this topic in depth in a later video. In the meantime, I have placed links to low and no-cost mental health services in the description. These include local and remote services to provide flexibility to fit your needs. As Americans, we should continue to advocate for universal healthcare so that we can abolish the stereotype that mental health services are only for individuals who make enough money or live in the right zip code.

I’m going to take my mental health as seriously as I take my physical health, and I haven’t had a doctor in 5 years!

I feel depressed, dull or tired, sad, distant, misunderstood, impulsive, and sometimes I get headaches. Also, I’m tired of trying.

Watching someone uneventfully making an appointment has never been this entertaining.

I just got done with therapy. It was a 5 mile run at the park. I took a picture of a snail and a baby turtle. Received sunshine and it was all free

How you started this video was so powerful! As a long time therapy client this meant a lot to me because the harmful stereotypes don't apply and mental health is vital to all of us.

Therapy isn't for everyone, I'm very self aware and in tune with my emotions and why I do things. When I go to therapy it honestly just feels like I'm teaching the therapist a class about me, except I find this to be pointless and annoying, I've never once learned anything about myself or anything helpful that I didn't already know and it just brings up past, resolved pain for no reason.

I generally described the subject as "a little lost in life", "basically normal", "doubtful", "might lash out more than other people", and with an image of a tired lady looking a little overwhelmed, but she takes care of her appearance and she self-reflected and decides that maybe she might go to a therapist. I'm proud that my mental portrayal wasn't overly negative and was just an example of a human being who has encountered problems in her life, as definitely do all humans all around us, and I just remembered:

It's normal to be in negative moods, to hold on to negative information that happened to your individual --- because that's what the human brain is designed to do, and it's looking out for you. Humanity has had way more murder, violence and problems than our cushy modern society will generally allow. I'd even say it's normal for all people to need therapy at some point in their life. If you're negative and holding on to stuff, that inherently and directly means you're an emotional individual, way better than a psychopath --- so don't be ashamed of having to go to therapy, because you actually have more going for you, that you should be proud of as a human being. It's vastly, vastly superior to being apathetic and without depth.

I am getting set up with a therapist on Monday for my first session in out patient therapy. The closest to a therapist I've had is psychological therapy after brain surgery

I think you setting up an appointment and sharing that with all of us has helped many of us make that same move. Thank you for doing what you do!

Though I think the content of this video comes from the right place and is well-intended, given my experiences over the past several years I can't help but feel troubled by it. Going to see a therapist is definitely a good idea for a lot of people, and it's probably true that everyone could see some benefit from it, but the comparison to a gym membership is actually pretty accurate -- in the sense that for a vast portion of the population, it's a luxurious indulgence that will never compete with buying food or fuel, or paying the rent or power bill. Likely those who need it most are those least likely to access it, and the failure to even mention this is somewhat disappointing. One of the adjectives I would have written down would be "financially stable".

Due to a failed experiment in entrepreneurship (turns out, I'm just not cut out for it), I spend many years in desperate need of mental health resources, and unable to afford it. I have a job and insurance now and things are improving in a pragmatic sense, but to get the job I've had to move to a remote area where there's almost no one available, and my insurance won't cover remote therapy so effectively I'm still stuck without usable mental health coverage. If I'd been able to get a job in the city where I lived, I would have. But on top of my other problems I was going broke, and was desperate for anything.

I am faced with a core truth, that should at least be acknowledged in a video like this one.

Mental health services are not intended for everyone in our society, in the same way that gyms aren't -- they're a luxury. Therapists don't serve people with mental or emotional difficulties they want to resolve, or people with a desire to maintain their mental health. Gyms don't serve people who want to work on their bodies.

Therapists and gyms serve a much smaller subset of people -- those who have these goals, *and money*.

The thing that's bothering me right now is that sometimes, I think that I don't deserve to see one. I often think that my problems are not as worse as other people and that I may be over reacting. However watching this alleviated that barrier and even motivated me to go. I know this would benefit me and those around me. Hopefully I can convince my parents to find me one as a birthday present hahaha :)
