Absolutely. You have to truly LISTEN, truly seek to understand their perspective and seek that alone. If you're thinking about what to say in return whilst you're listening, you're not actually trying to understand, you're trying to give the 'right' answer, to make yourself feel proud/ content/ happy. When you listen first & truly understand their emotional language you can help them so much more. It's a selfless act.

Empathy is understanding somebody else's pain because you've already experienced it having empathy for someone doesn't mean you should become a crutch for them let them know you've been there too and how you dealt with it and how it worked for you let them make their own decisions
