This place looks more like a WWI theme park than an actual battlefield

This is what a trench looks like when you're a German officer

That’s a luxury trench compared to the conditions of a first world war Trench

Now imagine if this trench was filled with mud, blood, rotting corpses of people and animals, rats, maggots, the constant stench of rot, and poisonous gas, and you’ll have an accurate depiction of what a trench was like during WWI

The battle of the Somme was one of the deadliest battles in history, and in World War I there was mud, which could swallow you whole trench foot, shell, shock, and diseased rats, and water, which can fill up a trench entirely

I understand why they did this, but I would have been more interested in seeing a more authentic version of the trenches. It would be interesting to see what they saw to an extent obviously.

Fun fact:
During the battle of somme the average life expecrancy was only 1 week.

It's so much better than reality though, those planks on the floor would've been a luxury

This is 10000x nicer and drier then what the men in the trenches had to actually go through and plus the almost constant bombardment of near miss artillery forced you to stay awake for long periods of time

Near my home In Yorkshire, there is an old WW2 prisoner of war camp called Eden camp, and it's now a museum and exhibit.

We went with our schools, as did every other school I knew, as it was part of our curriculum at the time, and Eden camp is renowned for its incredibly realistic huts, each of which is an interactive story about different aspects of the war.

Hut 11 I remember was akut the blitz in London, and inside the hut was a scene of a London street during a bombing, complete with smoke, smells, deafening explosions and blackout conditions. I remember it because it terrified me.

They had one hut which had trenches in, and the trenches looked filthy, with weapons strewn about, injured men being treated on the fire steps whilst the medics were knee deep in mud and shells were going off all around them.

I'd advise anyone who can to visit Eden camp, because I can't Imagine where are too many places which you can walk through ultra realistic war scenes and see what te soldiers saw.

The trench in this video is pristine, and a great visualisation of what the trenches looked like at first, but they would have looked like this for long before becoming the unholy lice riddled hell holes they really were.
