Imagine being a beacon man, on top of a freezing mountain, staring at a big fire.
The day they got to burn that pile of wood was probably the best day of their lives.

I love how the Shire theme starts playing for like 1 second when Pippin lights the fire, and then it abruptly ends as he realises he has to get down before the flames engulf him

The Lord of the Rings: making lighting a few bonfires the most epic thing ever.

Peter Jackson: “So we’re going to do a scene where the beacons are being lit, pretty simple”
Howard Shore: “I’m gonna do what’s called a pro gamer move”

"Hope is kindled" that line went through my head every time I got an extension during my masters

The reason I love this entire adventure is because everyone has a part to play. Even if they aren't the strongest fighter or an essentially immortal wizard, there are things they can do that the others can't and they can contribute in their own way to saving the world.

I literally NEVER fail to get the "chills" when I see this scene, accompanied by that stunningly glorious musical score!

NOTE: For even MORE awesomeness, pay attention to the fact that in the middle of the beacon lighting sequence it is NIGHT!! Peter Jackson and crew paid ATTENTION to the detail of TIME and how long such a chain of bonfires would actually take to cross the distance from Gondar to Rohan!! The entire sequence starts during one day, goes on through the night and into the following day!

This scene was to me a beautiful story of honor and devotion to duty. Each person in their isolated station was faithfully watching for the signal. Every day, every minute, for years and years. All of the flames were lit within seconds of the previous one, showing the honorable devotion to a promise made long before.

The book describes this entire scene as such an epic moment in the history of The Third Age.

The Movie delivers the exact same thing.

The distance conveyed by this is just amazing. And the whole scene is just showing hundreds of people working together for this one very thing.
It really shows that the old friendship between Rohan and Gondor is still there. All these people ready for this one moment, always staring, guarding, and watching in case Gondor calls for aid.

The two beacon men got fired by Denethor that night.

If not for the the quality of film, you would have no idea what decade this was made. Not a single hint of 80s it 90’s or 2000’s giving it away. Truly Timeless. These movies will live forever

This system of beacons really existed in the Byzantine Empire so that the emperor in Constantinople knew at the very moment the arabs were traspassing the border in Anatolia.

I remember watching this scene, in the theater, for the first time. I leaned over to my daughter, another Tolkien geek, and commented: just give them the Oscars for Cinematography and Music now, no need to wait for the nominations. Still EPIC all these years later.

The music in his scene is incredible. My favourite of all in the trilogy and Hobbit trilogy.

Judging by the number of views, criminally underrated scene. One of the best in the trlogy.
