Interesting bit about the forgetting earlier stages of religion is that it often happens with things that are considered to sacred or Dangerous to speak about Like the vowels in YHWH or the Old German word for bear.

since Tacitus only wrote from second-hand information my bet is on him purporting some "um, actually" tidbit that is um actually actually wrong. most likely bc the 2nd declension _-us_ ending often signifies a masculine noun and is the default to append if the original word/name is masculine and doesn't already have a suitable ending.

i do like the reminder that people do forget and re-interpret their myths though bc we often forget that, including for myths we believe in.

IIRC the Hindu god named Lakhsmi is male in North India and female in South India. I guess that the same could be true for Njörðr.
