Nicely done on discussing how "photographers" struggle a bit with the move to vid....definitely a struggle sometimes...

Good explanation about FPS and Shutter Speed. I'm learning about these 2 things. Also love the movements with your hands, it really adds something explainable to the video.

God bless you for using "intents and purposes" correctly.

As a photographer, thanks for helping me make the connection with shooting video! Great content on your channel, subbed!

Really appreciate how simply you explained that. I've only started filming and editing properly about 100 days ago - and I'm now off to look at the settings on my camera and the sequence settings in Premier. Thanks again : ) x

you can use the same shutter speed when shooting at 30p and then it scales much more nicely when people play it back on there 60hz monitor or 60hz mobile device.

Thank you for this. Very interesting and informative. Bottom Line IMO: It depends on what you are doing or trying to accomplish. 😀

This is an extremely clear & succinct treatment of this important & basic subject. V well done for vid newbies, esp folks crossing over from still photography.

So to achieve a cinematic video look, shoot at 120 fps and edit it in 24 fps?

Hey Chris, thanks for these inputs. Here is my question. Let's say I shoot a video in 25 fps and upload it to YouTube. What happens to my footage when someone watches the video on a Smart TV in an NTSC country? The TVs in NTSC countries have either 60 or 120 Hz. These numbers do not have a common denominator with 25 fps. Do Smart TVs adjust the frequency (refresh rate) to fit the footage? Or, do they automatically interpolate the 25fps footage? The second option could lead to some jittering. So, how to handle this problem? What is the best frame rate to shoot on when considering the fact that YouTube videos will be watched on TVs in NTSC and PAL countries? Thanks for your answer.

Hi Becki and Chris,

First of all, thanks a bunch for your videos!
As you are Sony experts and I am merely a novice, I have some questions for you.
I recently started photographing real estate as my main profession - all going very well - shooting in HDR and doing my job to everyone's satisfaction - having a blast!
Now I decided to transition into real estate video with my Sony A7III and it is like an entirely new world of trouble..
My goal is to shoot 'buttery smooth', high def, real estate videos for my clientele - it's not going the way i wished for.
I am experiencing immense stuttery/choppy video when moving around in a given house and I have tried to trouble-shoot it on the web, but I am having a hard time fixing the issue.
My setup is the following:
Sony A7III
35mm full-frame, FE4/16-35
Ronin-S Gimbal

I have setup the custom mode 1 to:
Manual Exposure
XAVC S 4K, 25p 100M, using the 180 degree rule for shutter speed = 1/50, F4.0.
As my focus isnt a single object my focus is set to wide and continuous focus.

I have setup the custom mode 2 to:
Manual Exposure
XAVC S HD, 50p 50M, using the 180 degree rule for shutter speed = 1/100, F4.0.
As my focus isnt a single object my focus is set to wide and continuous focus.

I have tried both setups with both steady and more raw movement on the gimbal. Either way I am getting stuttery/choppy/laggy/chunky video.
The videos i am aiming for are "walking tours" in and around the given house. As I am presenting holiday houses for German tourists in Denmark.
So my immediate need is to get the video 'butter-smooth' rather than cinematic. Also the videos are one-takes, not several clips with transitions.
Was wondering if my issue is due to too rapid movement or maybe some misconception of the shutter speed or maybe my file-format setup. Was also wondering if using a lens with wider aperture would make a difference - say maybe an F1.4 or F1.8?

Why am I experiencing this issue and what can I do to prevent it? I am frustrated using a supreme camera and not being able to produce just marginally satisfactory raw material.

Hope you have time and energy to help a novice out.
Thank you guys, and sorry for the massive post.

Anyone know how to work out the frames per second from a footage?

Very helpful, especially the section about shutterspeed for video vs photography - definitely something I haven't seen addressed enough!

I just asked this question to another youtuber, I want to compare the answers. Thanks for the great explanation. I'm still confused about recording in
24 when I only edit on imovie, which I think is a 30 fps timeline. Is
there a problem with forcing 24fps footage into a 30 fps timeline,
should I be recording at 30? I am talking about normal video speed, not
slow motion etc.

This was one of the most information-dense, useful videos I've seen during my amateur film self-education. Super well done

I always find that if I'm shooting 60fps, a shutter speed of 120 looks too staccato for my liking. I always find it better to match the shutter speed to the frame rate above 48fps (i.e. 1/48th for 48fps), and half the frame rate below (1/48th for 24fps). That's just me though.

Hi guys, I just started real estate videos; if I film them at 60 fps, what frame rate should I edit them in adobe premiere? What would you guys prefer? Or are you suppose to import at the same frame rate you filmed? Sorry, I'm new to this. Thank you, and love all.your videos❤
