CLIP DESCRIPTION:
After the band fractures, Mr. White (Tom Hanks) offers Guy (Tom Everett Scott) a few parting observations.

FILM DESCRIPTION:
Tom Hanks made his directorial debut in this bright comedy set in the mid-1960's about a rock group and their brief fling with fame. Guy Patterson (Tom Everett Scott) works as a salesman at his father's appliance store and plays the drums in his spare time, fancying himself a jazz musician. One day, a buddy of Guy's tells him a local rock band, The One-Ders (it's pronounced "wonders"), are in need of a drummer -- they have Battle of the Bands coming up and their usual timekeeper has broken his arm. Guy agrees to sit in, but when it's time to play their best original, a love ballad called "That Thing You Do," Guy lays in a sharp, driving beat that turns the tune into an uptempo pop-rocker. Lead singer Jimmy (Johnathon Schaech) isn't happy at first, but guitarist Lenny (Steve Zahn) and the nameless Bass Player (Ethan Embry) think the song sounds better that way -- and they notice the girls like it just fine. Soon people are actually requesting the song at their shows, and the One-Ders scrape together some money to press a single of "That Thing You Do" to sell between sets. A DJ puts the song on the radio, and opportunity knocks in the form of Mr. White (Tom Hanks), who works for the very major Play-Tone Records label. Play-Tone buys the rights to "That Thing You Do" and puts the band on the road as their song makes it way to the top of the national charts. But what can The Wonders (as Play-Tone have re-named them) do for an encore? And what should Guy do about his infatuation with Jimmy's girlfriend, Faye (Liv Tyler)? Real-life 60's obsessed rocker Chris Isaak has a small part as a recording engineer, and fans of real 60's garage bands will appreciate the wealth of small, accurately observed details (for example, halfway through the film, when a few "That Thing You Do" royalty checks have presumably kicked in, the band's inexpensive Danelectro guitars disappear and the Wonders are suddenly playing on brand new Fender gear -- the height of rock style in 1965).

Mr. White was right about Guy being the smart one. If it wasn't for him speeding up the song's tempo, the band wouldn't even have gone further than the talent show.

"Lenny is the fool, Jimmy is the talent, Fay is well Fay is special isn't she" Always loved this line

I always liked how he has a stern look when tells him they're in breach of contract, then kind of smiles and lets him off the hook. Kind of like, "You're a nice guy. I'm not going to torture you. This happens all the time. Good luck." This movie worked on so many levels.

Tom Hanks is the boss of this entire movie. He directed the movie and he portrays the the big boss of the group.

This film teaches a great lesson. If fame and glory are your first priorities you have a problem. Just do the best you can and enjoy it while it lasts.

And there lies the in-joke: "One-hit Wonders"

I've often wondered (no pun intended) if Mr. White knew they weren't going to make it. He's clearly been in the music world for a while, and despite the Wonders' talent and sound, he probably knew deep down they wouldn't last.

The thing I LOVE about this movie is how the sets and cinematography capture the popular style/image/architecture of that period. Even in this recording studio - it looks like the early 1960's..

Mr. White saying to Guy that Faye is special was the light switch moment.

love how everyone kind of ignores the original bass player. Hilarious little touch there.

The thing about this movie is, it shows how any band full of extremes is going to implode. Each member was over the top except Guy. Lenny was a party guy, Jimmy was Serious artists guy and TB Player was an extreme introvert. So much so nobody knew where he was when he joined the military.
None of the Beatles were the extremes that that media portrayed them to be. They all shared traits. Until the end when John decided he was going the Jimmy route and become a SERIOUS artist.

They made Jimmy the antagonist from the start. Guy improves his song, he melts down. They dont record his favored song(My Only Dreams) he breaks down, they pigeon hole him into a engagement with Faye, he breaks down huge and then when Mr White TELLS him what they are going to record he implodes the BAND. Guy WAS the smart one because through it all he just did what felt RIGHT and enjoyed it all for what it was.

"Lenny is the fool. Jimmy is the talent..." The Bass Player???? Not even mentioned. Gosh - he must have really pissed off someone.

One of the more interesting things about this movie is that Ethan Embry's character never had a name. He went through the entire movie without ever being called by his name. In this scene, he isn't even mentioned. Even the end credits refer to him as T.B. Player (The Bass Player).

When I first saw this movie, I thought Tom Hanks was playing a bad guy, but really he's not. He just plays a certain honest role in their life.
