CLIP DESCRIPTION:
When the band performs for the first time with Guy (Tom Everett Scott) on drums, he plays at a faster tempo, which gets the crowd dancing along.

FILM DESCRIPTION:
Tom Hanks made his directorial debut in this bright comedy set in the mid-1960's about a rock group and their brief fling with fame. Guy Patterson (Tom Everett Scott) works as a salesman at his father's appliance store and plays the drums in his spare time, fancying himself a jazz musician. One day, a buddy of Guy's tells him a local rock band, The One-Ders (it's pronounced "wonders"), are in need of a drummer -- they have Battle of the Bands coming up and their usual timekeeper has broken his arm. Guy agrees to sit in, but when it's time to play their best original, a love ballad called "That Thing You Do," Guy lays in a sharp, driving beat that turns the tune into an uptempo pop-rocker. Lead singer Jimmy (Johnathon Schaech) isn't happy at first, but guitarist Lenny (Steve Zahn) and the nameless Bass Player (Ethan Embry) think the song sounds better that way -- and they notice the girls like it just fine. Soon people are actually requesting the song at their shows, and the One-Ders scrape together some money to press a single of "That Thing You Do" to sell between sets. A DJ puts the song on the radio, and opportunity knocks in the form of Mr. White (Tom Hanks), who works for the very major Play-Tone Records label. Play-Tone buys the rights to "That Thing You Do" and puts the band on the road as their song makes it way to the top of the national charts. But what can The Wonders (as Play-Tone have re-named them) do for an encore? And what should Guy do about his infatuation with Jimmy's girlfriend, Faye (Liv Tyler)? Real-life 60's obsessed rocker Chris Isaak has a small part as a recording engineer, and fans of real 60's garage bands will appreciate the wealth of small, accurately observed details (for example, halfway through the film, when a few "That Thing You Do" royalty checks have presumably kicked in, the band's inexpensive Danelectro guitars disappear and the Wonders are suddenly playing on brand new Fender gear -- the height of rock style in 1965).

Anyone who has played in a band knows that "oh no the drummer is going too fast" is a universal feeling.

This is easily one of the most underrated movies of all time.

The moment when Faye hears the song on the radio and starts running along the street and screaming with joy always sends shivers down my spine.

I was fascinated with the way they directed this.  It's really not easy to have one guy (the drummer) playing at one tempo and the guying doing harmony gradually catching up to him and intentionally getting ahead of the lead singer...who drags behind defiantly until finally realizes the song is working better than it ever had.  Pretty masterful musical direction.

This proves that Lenny was the true visionary of the band....he knew what was up.

I love the fact that the actors went through months of music lessons and actually played their instruments for the entire movie.

I will forever remember and love how Lenny just WENT with it from the beginning

What has become an old trick. If a song sounds crappy slow, speed it up. If it sounds crappy fast, slow it down. Never know what you may get.

The hands-down best thing about this scene is Steve Zahn catching the groove before the rest of the band, and the hilarious joy on his face. "I don't know what this is, but it RULES." Never won't love this movie.

I love how at the beginning he’s still singing it like it’s a ballad

The attention to detail in the movie is amazing. Notice how the quality of their guitars gets better as they become more and more successful!

I love how Lenny "gets it" almost from the start... TB is lost and confused, Jimmy is pissed off, and Lenny has this look like, "HOLY CRAP! THAT'S how it's supposed to go!!!!"

I’m 70 now, but in my teens in the mid-60s, I played guitar in bands just like The Wonders. It was such great fun and I cherish the memories. I love this movie for all the same reasons as everyone else, but it also evokes a personal connection to the music, the era and my youth.

It's kinda crazy how *_great_* That Thing You Do(the song) is. Most movies that explore the 60's music scene that write original music for it...the songs end up sounding quite stale and imitative...just warmed-over cliches. But _this_ song is legit cool. If it had been released in the 60s it _easily_ would have become a #1 hit. It does pack a *_lot_* of early 60s songwriting cliches into a neat 3 minute package...but it does so, not in a cloyingly nostalgic way, but in the way an actual young band truly in love with music would do it. It just sounds *_fresh_* as hell. :)

1:44 I was a drummer in several garage bands in the 60's. The first time you hit the sweet spot in a song, it is absolutely amazing. You do wonder, what the hell is going on. Magic!

This song was huge in the 90s. It brings back memories of my childhood. I didn't even know it's by a fictitious band from a movie! Adam Schlesinger is a genius. RIP.

I love how about 1:50 Jimmy just gives in to the fact that the song belongs with this pace :)
