CLIP DESCRIPTION:
When their song hits the airwaves, the band members converge to celebrate wildly.

FILM DESCRIPTION:
Tom Hanks made his directorial debut in this bright comedy set in the mid-1960's about a rock group and their brief fling with fame. Guy Patterson (Tom Everett Scott) works as a salesman at his father's appliance store and plays the drums in his spare time, fancying himself a jazz musician. One day, a buddy of Guy's tells him a local rock band, The One-Ders (it's pronounced "wonders"), are in need of a drummer -- they have Battle of the Bands coming up and their usual timekeeper has broken his arm. Guy agrees to sit in, but when it's time to play their best original, a love ballad called "That Thing You Do," Guy lays in a sharp, driving beat that turns the tune into an uptempo pop-rocker. Lead singer Jimmy (Johnathon Schaech) isn't happy at first, but guitarist Lenny (Steve Zahn) and the nameless Bass Player (Ethan Embry) think the song sounds better that way -- and they notice the girls like it just fine. Soon people are actually requesting the song at their shows, and the One-Ders scrape together some money to press a single of "That Thing You Do" to sell between sets. A DJ puts the song on the radio, and opportunity knocks in the form of Mr. White (Tom Hanks), who works for the very major Play-Tone Records label. Play-Tone buys the rights to "That Thing You Do" and puts the band on the road as their song makes it way to the top of the national charts. But what can The Wonders (as Play-Tone have re-named them) do for an encore? And what should Guy do about his infatuation with Jimmy's girlfriend, Faye (Liv Tyler)? Real-life 60's obsessed rocker Chris Isaak has a small part as a recording engineer, and fans of real 60's garage bands will appreciate the wealth of small, accurately observed details (for example, halfway through the film, when a few "That Thing You Do" royalty checks have presumably kicked in, the band's inexpensive Danelectro guitars disappear and the Wonders are suddenly playing on brand new Fender gear -- the height of rock style in 1965).

Liv Tyler hearing "That Thing You Do" on the radio for the first time is one of the greatest moments in motion picture history.

For some reason watching this clip makes me tear up. i can't think of a better example of unrestrained joy in any movie than there is in this scene.

This scene captures the beauty and excitement of being young. And the song is amazing for being just a vehicle for the film. It is a legitimate hit.

This has to be one of the greatest feelings ever.

This scene is so over-the-top euphoric and upbeat - you want to cry at how happy everyone is. Thank you, Tom Hanks, for writing and directing this film.

It's hard for me to think of a happier scene in a movie.

Another neat thing I noticed is that right at about 2:00, Jimmy (the lead singer) points at Guy (the drummer) and then you can hear him yell, "You were right!" (referring to Guy's spur of the moment decision to speed up the tempo at the talent show earlier).

Faye screaming at the bass player, "WE'RE ON THE RADIO!!! THAT THING YOU DO IS ON!!!" shaking him and throwing him against the door while the bass player screamed like a girl was hilarious lol!

RIP Adam Schlesinger. Your music meant so much to so many people. Heaven just got one heck of a musician.

This is my favorite scene in the film. Unbridled and unrestrained joy. I feel like people are too self conscious to do this anymore.

Sidebar - There are so many great things about this film. The fact that The Bass Player doesn’t have a name, the Beatles references, the soundtrack, the casting. This film gets so little love/appreciation it’s a crime.

This is the by far the most memorable scene of the entire movie. Seeing the group so elated brings me so much joy. It’s actually kind of tragic that growing up forces us to almost never experience this kind of uncontrollable jubilation as adults so its just wonderful seeing grown men/women celebrate like kids.

I think it is really cool how the music gets louder as they tune more radios into the station (WJET) the song is playing on. A great song, a beautiful scene, and a cool aesthetic.

Couple things I love about this scene;

1. At 1:20 the bass player bangs on the speaker at the exact same part where the claps and drums start/increase and the music gets much louder. Great synchronization!
2) As soon as they each hear the song on the radio, nothing else in the world matters and they drop what they’re doing to celebrate (i.e. parking the car in the middle of the road with the passenger door not closed)

This might be the best personification of joy I’ve ever seen on screen. Can’t help but smile for them every time I see this scene.

I saw them filming this scene, especially the part where they burst into the appliance store. I was standing off to the left across the street -- out of camera range of course. LOL
