How to Treat a Bitten Tongue

Eating is hardly considered a risky behavior — but once in a while an exuberant chomp can result in a bitten tongue.

Step 1: Use ice
Suck on an ice cube or a Popsicle for several minutes.

Tip
If you're treating a child, remember that kids take their cues from you, so calm them down by acting like the injury is no big deal.

Step 2: Stop the bleeding
With the gauze or washcloth, press on the area that’s bleeding until it’s no longer bleeding.

Warning
If the bleeding doesn't stop after 15 minutes, seek medical attention.

Step 3: Rinse with salt water
Rinse and spit with salt water or a solution of one part hydrogen peroxide, two parts water.

Tip
If you have a lot of pain or the accident happens before bedtime, take a recommended dose of pain reliever.

Step 4: Let it heal
Don't eat acidic or salty foods for a day or two. And chew a little more carefully from now on!

I accidentally hit my tongue and now there’s a small but hurtful cut on my tongue which stings so much. It’s been almost 6 days and it still hurts. I can’t properly eat food because of this

I've accidentally bitten my tongue in the same spot 10 times in 4 days! It is one of life's most infuriating things. I've decided to write 'tongue' on the back of my hand to remind myself to chill the feck out when I'm eating and be careful. The problem is that when the pain dissipates you forget that the area is still swollen and then out of nowhere CHOMP!

I actually bit my tongue with one of my canine teeth (the pointy teeth), it was quite painful.

My dentist recommended that I should wrap an ice cube in a paper towel. Then put it where the injury is for three or four minutes. Do that five times a day. And it should heal in three or four days. The pain will not go away all at once but progressively become less and less.

Bit my tongue 3 days ago from having a Sezuire and seriously I am having a awful time trying to eat and drink with this pain in my mouth. I hope it heals soon let’s hope it’s heals by the end of the week.

Sometimes when I bite my tongue the pain lasts a few minutes, when it bleeds I just let it bleed you won't pass away or nothing.

I bit mine right at the tip.. I have a permanent retainer in the back of my teeth and keeps touching and irritating it. I feel the bite bump on my tongue with my lips T-T 2 days!!

I just bit my tongue 15 minutes ago eating an apple, and after it HURT LIKE HELL then it started BLEEDING PROFUSELY for several minutes. Now it's SWELLING up.

Was hoping to grab a Mexican burrito tonight for dinner, but no the spicy food warning is making me cautious. This sucks!
