FILM DESCRIPTION:
The Great Escape is based on the true story of a group of Allied prisoners of war who managed to escape from an allegedly impenetrable Nazi prison camp during World War II. At the beginning of the film, the Nazis gather all their most devious and troublesome POWs and place them at a new prison camp, which was designed to be impervious to escapes. Immediately, the prisoners develop a scheme where they will leave the camp by building three separate escape tunnels. Richard Attenborough is the British soldier who masterminds the whole plan, and who commands his motley squad--featuring Charles Bronson as a Polish trench-digging expert, James Garner as an American with a talent for theft, Donald Pleasence as a masterful forger, and Steve McQueen as an American rebel--through the construction of the tunnels and, eventually, their escape. An epic adventure film, The Great Escape runs nearly three hours, featuring a rousing Elmer Bernstein score and exciting action sequences -- including a notorious motorcycle chase between McQueen and the Nazis -- the likes of which had never been seen before in Hollywood productions.

I love the level of sophistication these men have, despite this being fictitious. Props to them having people watching the doors and they were quick to cover their tracks in about 30 seconds.

During idle periods while The Great Escape (1963) was in production, all cast and crew members - from stars Steve McQueen and James Garner to production assistants and obscure food service workers - were asked to take thin, five-inch strings of black rubber and knot them around other thin strings of black rubber of enormous length. The finished results of all this knotting were the coils and fences of barbed wire seen throughout the film.

My late father was there in real life, but not on the escape wing there were over 1500 inmates. Apparently they all knew something was going on but didnt know what. He made it back after the "long march" as the allies advanced where if you didnt or couldnt keep up you were shot. RIP dad (and my younger brother that served in the Falklands as an explosive clearance diver.)

Through a slight error in subterranean navigation the tunnel came up in the camp commandant’s living quarters. Much to the chagrin of soil boring crew. The tunnel had taken an imperceptible gradual curve and circled back upon itself. As luck would have it the commandant was snoozing at the time and was none the wiser as the tunnelers redirected their cutting edge of progress. This time making progress towards and open field near the deadline fence.
