I used to belong to a union and one thing they taught me in one of their meetings is SCREEN YOUR CALLS and don't answer them if it's on the day(s) you agreed with them to have off, either your regular days off or PTO they approved of. So just hang up when your boss calls you, especially if they start their sentence off with "I know it's your day off but..."

No one should be routinely working more than 12 hrs a day. You're basically asking for more mistakes and accidents.

What you have to do is establish a relationship with money. Do what you want. People just want to use you.

Yeah bosses who work 12hr days often want (and hire) people who have to suffer thru it with them. Regardless if its actually needed or worthwhile. Usually its all make-work nonsense. Different from actually all working hard together on a project

Bosses like these demanding unreasonable shifts or "as needed" more often than not are all about making merits at the expense of employees exploitation, to get a promotion just for themselves, or climb the ladder no matter what. That's a red flag you don't want to get into a dead alley without career progress, no expectations. That overworking should be for a limited time, occasionally and of course paid overtime, but shouldn't be in a coercive way and should be the employees choice.

If your boss and most importantly your colleagues often stay late at work or answer emails and phones during weekends, evenings and pto- leave that team. Burnout is a serious condition.
