Why are there so many LGBTQs in Thailand?

Thailand, the country of Buddhism.
95 per cent of the population are Buddhists, and almost all men enter temples and become monks at least once in their lives.
It is a very religious country. But also home to sexual minorities, especially those of transgender sexual orientation.
So, Why are there so many LGBTQs in Thailand?

In Thailand, Miss Tiffany Universe, a transgender beauty competition, has been held for more than 20 years, and the competition show is broadcasted through Thai television.
LGBTQ people seem to be so socially accepted to the extent that even the Thai Tourism Organization launched a campaign called “Go Thai, Be Free” to attract LGBTQ tourists.

Ironically, however, Thailand is a conservative country when it comes to sex.
You are conservative about sex, but openly accept sexual minorities?
What's going on?
There are many explanations for this phenomenon, but understanding Thai’s social climate seem to provide the most reasonable explanation.

First of all, Thai means Free, so Thailand's name actually means 'free land'.
It is said that Thai people value freedom and respect the freedom of choice of others.
Therefore, it is easier to change sex than other countries.

Secondly, Thai people, of whom 95% of the population believes in Buddhism, view LGBTQ from the perspective of karma.
Living as a sexual minority is therefore thought to be the result of the person's karma, and that it should be viewed and considered by others with the eyes of mercy.

In all, the number of LGBTQs have increased as a result of greater societal acceptance due to this traditional Buddhist perspective towards LGBTQs, in addition to a general social atmosphere that respects freedom.

In other words, because there is less discrimination against LGBTQ people, many people decide to come out and live freely as LGBTQ people.

Of course, there may also be economic reasons.

In fact, Buddhism does not view being lgbtq as a karma. It was later created by right-wing monks 😫 .In the Buddha's time The Buddha allowed lgbtq people to be ordained. Everyone can achieve the Dhamma and be free from suffering.

Whether it’s karma or not is not really an issue, we all have our own karma. However, whether it is by karma, by nature, or by nurture, the choice you have is how you treat them. Treat them with compassion as a human being enduring human suffering, or adding to that suffering through your actions. How you treat others is not a reflection of them, but a reflection of you.

As a Thai Buddhist, I would like to explain that the main reason for this comes from the teachings of the Buddha.

1. The Buddha taught that we should always reflect on our own mistakes and avoid focusing on the faults of others. The world is full of conflict and harm because people tend to focus only on others' mistakes: "Why didn't she do this?" or "Why isn't he like that?" Focusing on others clouds our minds and prevents us from improving ourselves. The Buddha said, "The wicked criticize others, while the wise criticize themselves." So, if you come to Thailand, you might be surprised that people here don't care whether you're a black people, LGBT, or a poor Westerner. We don’t focus on such things because Buddhists emphasize their own responsibilities. There is a teaching that says, "Do not dwell on the negative words of others. Do not focus on what others have or haven't done. Focus only on what you must do."

2. We believe that all beings, including animals—even ants and mosquitoes—are trapped in the same suffering within a cycle called samsara. This cycle imprisons us in the human world, hell, and even heaven. We are all born into this world without asking for it, yet we all must endure a fate we don't understand. Therefore, all beings are in the same situation of suffering, helplessness, and lack of control. This leads us to show compassion for one another, avoiding harm in our words, actions, and thoughts. Anything that would bring suffering to others, even a small ant, we avoid doing. The Buddha taught, "You love yourself and dislike suffering, and other beings love themselves and dislike suffering just as you do. Whatever you dislike, do not impose on others." This is why everyone in this country lives freely, but it's a freedom with rules—you can be whoever or do whatever you like, as long as you do not cause harm to others. We wake up each day with love and compassion for all living beings, not just for fellow Thais or humans.

3. The Buddha also taught that what matters in life is not "Who are you?" but "What do you do?" The most worthless person is someone who lives in a way that causes suffering to others, while the most valuable person is one who brings happiness to others. Imagine two people: the first is a cisgender man who often fights, steals, commits adultery, lies, drinks excessively, and gambles. The second is a trans person who is kind, cares for their family, is sincere, and loves helping others. Between these two, who do you think brings more value to the world? You probably know the answer.

4. The Buddha said that the most harmful acts of humans are the ten unwholesome actions: killing, stealing, sexual misconduct, lying, slander, harsh speech, idle talk, covetousness, ill will, and wrong views. Anyone who engages in these is considered wicked and unfit to live among humans. Upon death, they will be reborn as animals or sent to hell. Therefore, bad people are not trans people, people of color, or the poor. If you read the Theravada Pali Canon in English, you will understand why Thailand is the way it is. And if the world were full of people who thought like Buddhists, there would be no wars, no harm done to others, and no need to demand rights, because everyone would live their lives as if in heaven on earth.
