The West Block: May 21, 2023 | Feds’ bail changes not responsible for violent crime rise: minister

Police chiefs across the country are sounding the alarm over a recent rise in violent crime. Ten police officers in Canada have been killed since September, and violent attacks on public transit have many Canadians concerned about safety in their communities. After pressure from the provinces and police, the federal government introduced new bail reform changes aimed at cracking down on repeat violent offenders. ‘The West Block’ host Mercedes Stephenson sits down with Justice Minister David Lametti to talk about whether this new change will really curb violent crime.

Plus, foreign interference has dominated discussions in Ottawa for months. Conservative MP Michael Chong, who was a target of intimidation by China, appeared before a committee urging the government to be more transparent with Parliament and the public. Ahead of special rapporteur David Johnston’s long-awaited announcement over whether Canada will have a public inquiry into foreign interference, ‘The West Block’ host Mercedes Stephenson speaks with Bob Fife, the Ottawa bureau chief for The Globe and Mail, and Stephanie Levitz from The Toronto Star about what this interference scandal means for the parties moving forward – whether or not an inquiry is called.

If a Liberal-NDP government minister says bail changes are not responsible for violent crime rise, you can be certain that it is.

Interesting headline. I wonder how they explain the people that commit a crime right after they are released on bail.

Going soft on repeat offenders couldn't possibly cause any issues. 🙃

I wonder if Mr. Johnstone is a man of honor? Or will he blame the other side?

I voted for Trudeau. I saw during his tenure 1) housing out of reach for average Canadians. 2) violent crimes and general crime increase 3) Drugs and addictions crisis out of control
4) Free speech threatened on campus
6) economy out of control with inflation
7) more immigrant let in than we can handle with housing
8) real estate inflated prices out of control by air bnb and foreign investors.
10) government focused more on 2% of the population than all of us.
11) Chinese interference ignored
I should have known better than to voted for a drama teacher to run the country. I’m done with Trudeau

13:31 this should be interesting. Will Johnston take a classic cloak and dagger approach? Or will he help shine a very very very bright light on this issue?

The reality is courts are overwhelmed and confused by police and unindependent crown offices. Both the Crown and the lawyer can make a deal behind the judge's knowledge. Case of Miles Gray, who was beaten to death by Vancouver police despite being handcuffed and pepper sprayed, revealed that the police systematically concealed and tampered with evidence. And incidents of police shootings have risen by 25% over the past year alone. In Quebec, more than 400 people have been illegally detained, can you imagine? Arbitrary detention in a democratic country! About 70% of prisoners in Canada are not convicted yet . Crimes reported to the police account for more than 5% of Canada's population. The conviction rate is about 50%. The average waiting period for a trial is 12 to 18 months. In Canadian law, both a piece of paper or a machete can be called equally as a weapon.

22:12 agreed. He is not effective and doing what he did is wrong.
PP is also naive. Very naive. Which makes him useful for the prc Geopolitical objectives. Including their cognitive warfare ops against Canadians.

19:39 i wish they got it. Too bad certain individuals refuse to take the issue seriously. It has not passed the smell test at all.
I get it. They are naive. They still are naive and are putting economic benefits above National Security.
