Once you understand enough about Linux, Distros don't matter that much cause you can do pretty much the same thing in any of them.

Imo it is interesting that often people who like Arch also like Debian.

A distro is a collection of software packages put together with settings to tie it all into a system to be used as a starting point for what will be your system.

You may not want to fiddle with desktop settings and themes so you'll gravitate towards one that has what you want already set. Or you may want bare bones, no frills, do it all yourself and go for Arch and manually set it all up yourself. Try a few out, stick to the one you like the most and check back on the others in a year or two to see if they're doing anything that peaks your interest. You don't have to keep distro hopping every a new distro comes out.

For me it's about finding the right tool for the job. It would be like looking in your tool box and pulling out one hammer and saying I love this hammer and I will use it and nothing else for every job. Well sometimes you just need a screwdriver man. Same goes with distros. I use what works best for that particular use case, don't limit yourself to any one distro.

My picks are Arch @home on all desktop PC's and laptop, Debian stable/testing @work.

Linux Distros are great and all but there is no single Perfect Distro.

When will you release your own Titux Linux Distro? It will be bleeding edge and truly stable and tested at the same time. It will ship with all window managers and DEs in one install and it will be a rolling release and a release cycle at the same time!

Truly the ultimate Linux Distro!

Based on Debian->Ubuntu->Linux Mint->some other Distro->Titux Linux and it will use rpm!

Ok so theres 3 distros that are worth your time. Debian, Arch, Redhat. If you can understand well enough just Debian and Redhat based distros theres even career prospects. Just know this. Linux can be easy or hard its not perfect but does a great job at many things. Its just a tool at the end of the day. Dont get hung up on a distro. Those flame wars are a complete waste of time. I use Debian stable because I like stable. Its boring and allows me to focus on everything else I want to do. The choice is yours.

On the outside looking in, I never understood why Linux has so many distros. On the inside.... I still don't understand. Why are we wasting so much effort on distros and packages? Under the hood it's all the same so why are we repeating so much work that someone else has already done?

KDE Neon Unstable paired with a Git kernel is working great for me at the moment — needed to change some kernel configuration options related to module signing to get “make bindeb-pkg” to work, but once I did that, well, then it was easy to get going. Compared to the kernel and desktop environment, don’t care about other software being out-of-date as much, especially with distro-agnostic package formats now existing.

I have been using Debian for 23 years now. At first Gnome 2 then XFCE and my desktop of choice Mate. My Arch and Gentoo friends joke that in 23 years they updated the software at least twice.

I hate Debian and its derivatives because they try to hide the details and they're always reminding me to update.
I'll update when I'm good and ready.
Other than that, Linux is basically Linux.
