I’m in nursing school right now and had ER clinical last night. It was a quiet night and a well staffed ER. One of the nurses not much older than me let me do my first ever IV on him. He had good arm veins and wasn’t phased by my lack of experience. It was awesome!

Thanks for doing a live demo. I would love more of this. An overhead shot be good since her hand was in the way. Thanks again.

We have different IV cannulas, but once I initially poke someone and get flashback, I wait (count to 2), then advance the whole cannula (needle and all) to open the hole in the skin a little more, then advance the plastic tube (catheter) and withdraw the needle. Too often I think new nurses try to be too quick and don't open the skin access that little bit extra, so when they advance the catheter it kinks on them. The patients will quite often have a fight or flight reaction from the pain, and their vein can collapse, being patient allows the vein to refill before you try to advance the catheter. Speed comes later, skill first :) Also, don't be afraid of the tourniquet, tie it like you mean it. A loose tourniquet doesn't do anything. I also like to explain to my patient what to expect ie/nasty poke here, just give me a second, I know that tourniquet is tight, communication goes a long way!

The angle of the video wasn't great. You couldn't see the vein she was going for or the insertion. It would've been better from a different angle, but the teaching was well done.

I appreciate this video; it is so mandatory, it is so hidden.

I missed cannulating patients. Please do a video on how to dispense a medication via pyxis machine. Thankssss. Appreciate your time and efforts especially to nurse mike who sacrificed himself just to educate nurses

I really love this live demo, I just wish that the camera zoomed in as a birds-eye view more on the detail for inserting the needle into the vein, as well as dressing it, etc. =(

Not a very good visual of the technique. Perhaps in the next video we can get a close up. Thank you

I couldn’t see her inserting the IV. Seems simple though. Practice makes perfect!
