You will have much more success with a shallow angle. When i was just learning, i was told to have a 40-45 degree angle and wait for flash and level out... the problem is with that steep angle, the likihood of puncturing the other side of the lumen is incredibly high, especially in a dehydrated patient. Steep angles should be reserved for deep veins with ultrasound.

This makes so much sense, no one ever verbalized this. Thank you!

I’m not even a nursing or med student yet and already doing research. I love it.

Thanks for this video. I'm a new nurse and this is extremely helpful. I've had practice on a training course before without success, and a very low angle must be one of the reasons. 😃

What if you take it out on your own will the needle be stuck in your vein?

Don't do this!!! The diameter of the lumen of the vein is tiny and you will blow it very easily. Chances of puncturing the inferior wall of the vein are much less with a shallow angle. Also more importantly need to anchor the vein with the thumb of the other hand meaning pull down on it with the thumb to avoid it moving/ rolling. Good luck everyone.
