Dave looks at possibly the world's most dangerous consumer product, a portable electrode boiler based water heater available on ebay.
Marketed as "safe", it is nothing less than a death trap!

EDIT: Holy crap! They sell this as a baby bath heater!

Would be interesting to measure the actual current from water to ground

It's like a "DIY" water heater developed by prisoners, using two razor blades, spacers, and a power cable...

In soviet union everyboye used(in travels or in case of survival purposes) DIY device with same principle of operation.
Two blades for shaving, two wires, and matches for mechanical connection...fatal defect was that it can\t boil soup, because soup should be salted :-D

4:50 This is incredibly late but yes, if you electrolyse water with chloride in it, it releases chlorine gas, especially when your overpotential is 120 to 240 V. This product is insane.

This is not the worst they made. They made a bigger one for a baby bath(baby bath warmer). Imagine putting your baby in a bath of death.

You missed a educational point in this video. Here you just show that it works, and people not familiar with electricity don't see the problem. But if you had put a metal spoon in a glass while this was heating, then you could measure the voltage between the spoon and ground to be half of the mains.

A very likely use of this is to heat tea, and some will eventually add sugar and start stirring before it has finished heating, and then would get shocked if they had any connection to ground.

Not to mention this thing might be producing hexavalent chromium in that water if the plates are cheapo stainless steel.

Big Clive covered this a few weeks ago. Ironically probably not as dangerous as the electrically heated shower head he also covered.

Somebody should inform ebay they're selling potentially lethal goods. Knowing them they'd remove the item quickly.

I love it when Dave comments on Australian, You don't have much room to maneuver when it comes to butchering the English Language.

This was a common fixture in my grandmother's house when I was growing up. We also metal buckets. It has blown quite a few fuses but I guess that is cheaper than a wall mounted water heater.

BigClive has done several videos on these.

Could it be designed for 120V and not 240V? could be why it's drawing 1+kW instead of ~500W. It's not safe operating a device above it's rated voltage!

I'll buy one for my mother in law telling her it's for a detox foot bath.
