Since the launch of the unprecedented Reclaiming Native Truth Project in 2018, Indian Country has collectively achieved a number of exciting milestones that have propelled forward the visibility of Native peoples in dominant society, and revealed new questions around public perception and dominant narratives that impact Native peoples within the U.S.

Among the most groundbreaking and historic moments for Indian Country and the visibility for Native leadership came in 2018 when Deb Haaland (Laguna Pueblo) and Sharice Davids (Ho-Chunk) became the first two Native women elected to Congress. Peggy Flanagan (White Earth Ojibwe) was also elected in 2018 as Minnesota Lieutenant Governor. She became the country’s highest ranking Native woman elected to executive office. Deb Haaland went on in 2021 to be confirmed as the first Native person to serve as the Secretary of the Department of the Interior and to serve as a Cabinet Secretary. Secretary Haaland, Representative Davids, and Lieutenant Governor Flanagan have become powerful symbols, agents, and sources of inspiration for the visibility and power building for Native peoples and women.
