My cousin was a xerox repairman in Washington DC in the 90s. His mom was Russian, and so he speaks fluent Russian. One day, he was sent to repair a machine at the Russian embassy. He was delighted that he'd be able to converse in Russian and went around the embassy, chatting everyone up in Russian. They kicked him out and asked the company to send a different tech and never send him there again. He thought he did something wrong but soon figured out that they were worried he was a spy.

I was friends with my high school janitor Ray cool dude, and he would let me in and tell me the tunnel system built under my school in the 30’s… for a year no one could figure out how I beat everyone to class across the school in a school of 3000 kids until the VP eventually caught on and when he confronted me I just told him honestly that I found the old tunnels very cool and historic and so he gave me a full tour and made me promise not to show other kids and stop going down there. It was sweet though Tommy Chong’s signature was on the wall down there with many others from former students and the giant laundry room was closed off halfway because they had a shooting range there during WW2 and the back wall was literally filled with lead from when they taught high school kids how to shoot. I’m easily one of the only kids in decades that’s seen those tunnels thanks forever Ray

This guy just made the business case for not outsourcing IT services.

Fun fact: every copy machine out there saves every document it scans in its cache. That cache is not encrypted, and depending on your expertise, it is very, very easy to access. Some machines will just let you pull up the cache in an administrator mode and reprint everything that it scanned.

Copy machines are a security nightmare.

I serviced copiers for 21 years. I repaired copiers on base at Ft. Bragg for a while and I was never allowed to have my laptop, tool bag or anything like a phone ect....I was allowed to take exactly what I thought I needed to fix the machine, screwdriver and what part i might need. Every step I took i had an armed MP with me. I also had to sign papers stating whatever I saw I could not discuss with ANYONE. If I did I'd be jailed for treason. Needless to say no one never knew what I saw. I'll never speak of it. God bless every single male and female that protect this country. There is so much more to it than just fighting. A lot of tech. People in the background that makes it all work. God bless and thank y'all for all your service

The moral of the story, don't dismiss the people on the lower rung of any business.
They're the invisible cogs that can make or break a company.

I remember my grandpa telling Dad when he started his business and had to deal with officials: Son, wherever you go, bring small gifts to secretaries and tip janitors and doormen. You'll be sure your documents needing signatures are always on the top, you'll have all the necessary info about some officials being present and their moods, and you'll always have some valuable information about things you might need.
Grandpa had multiple jobs, but we all were surprised when his funeral was attended by some state security top officials.

I was a Private Contractor Paramedic in Iraq and Afghanistan, due to my access to the maps of my base I had to have a basic security clearance (Confidential).

One day a fellow medic accidentally copied a medical report that had a "Confidential" label for some reason. He immediately reported the incident, took full responsibility and explained what happened and why. For the next 5 days we had an armed guard sitting/standing next yo our copier 24 hours a day. Until the copier was removed and replaced with a new one. Apparently they were worried about the "electronic buffer" containing an image of the classified document.

Even the guard thought it was ridiculous that he was there (they were good guys though, we enjoyed hanging out with them). But make no mistake, lots of people are aware of the security risks that come from copiers.

I suddenly recall Saul Goodman’s speech about photocopier machines.

Be friendly and courteous to all maintenance people, they know how to make things fast, fix the unfixable, or even just be a fly on a wall.
