Many of us would say that our goal for French is to be a fluent speaker. However, I've found that people struggle to agree on exactly one meaning of fluency in French.
I sat down with Solène, fluent speaker of 3 languages (elle parle couramment 3 langues), to discuss the various meanings and the importance of knowing what it is we're targeting for in French.

Selon le dictionnaire Larousse, le mot couramment, lorsqu'il est utilisé dans le contexte de l'expression d'une langue, est défini comme suit:
"La connaître suffisamment pour la parler, l'écrire, la lire sans hésitation ni effort."
"sans hésitation ni effort"... C'est ma définition subjective, mon but et surtout mon défi!

I'm conversant in French after visiting dozens of times. To feel completely fluent, I'd use music and film as barometers. I'd want to be able to understand the lyrics of a song sung in French the first time I heard it, or catch every quick slang expression or idiom in a film. Until then, I'll fudge the handful of 26 tenses that I couldn't master in high school. (I didn't study it at university). Tant pis.

Great video! For myself I'd add that fluency was something I reached at, a number of different points on my journey (I get by in Welsh and Italian) . For instance - with both languages I only intended to learn some basic courtesy conversation for when I was - asking for a beer or rail ticket or saying - Good morning or please thank you etc. and reached "fluency" at that level. Happy with that in itself but getting the taste and thinking - "Hmm, I'll learn a little more..." - thus gradually moving forward with baby steps overtime - years - to different points of "fluency" until I could say I could hold a reasonable conversation on a variety of topics and managing to read and write o.k.
I never describe myself as fluent say; but am happy to hear others say I am...LOL!
Like yourself though both led - for me unintentionally - to opportunities I'd never imagined or calculated because of the levels I reached....

I put (for myself) fluency at a very high level. I'm quite picky in terms of vocabulary, and it's frustrating to me, not to be able to use the most accurate word. In everyday life, you will constantly struggle with objects/things/concepts realising you don't know the proper word for them (kitchen tools, mechanical parts, gardening/farming tools and concepts...). I can only consider myself fluent in French and English now I have worked and lived in France and the UK, but I can't in German, because even if I can travel, and have quick chat, I wouldn't be able to work or have a "complex" conversation with someone.

If you look up on Reverso what interlocuteurs is..guess what it translates to.... interlocutors. LOLOL But It also gives counterparts, partners, focal points.

Maybe my definition of fluency aims too high. For me fluency is speaking French as well as I speak English. What’s worse, by todays standards my English vocabulary and grammar are very extensive so fluency in French may never be achieved.
