So you want to be a rheumatologist. You like to solve complex puzzles and go through a lot of trial and error with your patients. In this video, you’ll learn how to become a rheumatologist and whether or not it’s the right specialty for you.

In our So You Want to Be series, we highlight specialties and careers within medicine to help you decide if they’re a good fit for you. Let’s debunk the public perception myths and give it to you straight. This is the reality of rheumatology.

What is Rheumatology? Rheumatology is the specialty of medicine focused on musculoskeletal problems and autoimmune diseases, where the body’s immune system is dysfunctional, and the body basically attacks itself.

Should You Become a Rheumatologist? If you enjoy the cognitive aspects of medicine and want a specialty with a good work-life balance where you spend time building long-lasting connections with your patients, rheumatology may be right for you.

What other medical careers do you want us to cover in future videos?

Can you please talk about immunology next? Because it’s not talked about much, and it’s often confused with rheumatology, thank you

I love the professionals who work in Rheumatology! I have been dealing with difficult bones for a while now, but more notably within the last 4 years. Everyone kept telling me that it was because I’m not in my youth anymore. But I just had the feeling that it was something else that I just couldn’t put a finger on. After having my 3rd surgery on my left foot at the age of 31, I was finally able to get into a Rheumatologist. She sat down with me, took her time to view my chart records, and Ultimately diagnosed me with psoriatic arthritis. And It wasn’t till this year that I’ve felt like I’ve actually been able to work towards relief on my symptoms. I think mine was just hard to diagnose too because I’m one of the few PsA patients who don’t have Psoriasis.

Future/current rheumatologists please listen to your patients and their concerns. Mine shrugged off my symptoms for years but kept me coming back "just to make sure".
My pcp did tests and confirmed that things are super out of the ordinary and show autoimmune activity so now i have to see another rheumatologist to get diagnosed
