I feel very privileged and grateful that this series exists at this point in my life.

As an endocrinologist, I think this is a pretty good summary of the subspecialty. I live outside the U.S. though where our rate of obesity is far lower. That's why most of the patients I handle are thyroid and diabetes cases, with pituitary, adrenal, etc. cases being relatively uncommon. Also, a lot of people don't know what an endocrinologist handles, unlike, say, cardiology which many people know as related to heart diseases. As a funny anecdote, I've actually gotten one or two patients who mistakenly consulted me instead of a gastroenterologist for ENDOscopy. 😄

Also, I am involved in two internal medicine (IM) residency training programs and hence I interact with a lot of IM residents. Many of them are daunted by endocrinology because it seems complex and it is more "abstract" than some other subspecialties. For example, you can't view hormones and their pathways in the same way as a gastroenterologist can look at ulcers or masses during endoscopy, or how a hematologist can examine blood cells under a microscope. I believe this is alluded to in the video by the part which says endocrinology requires a lot of clinical reasoning. We typically just look at numbers (lab values), which can be as simple as blood glucose or more specialized stuff, like the aldosterone-renin ratio, then correlate this with other labs and the patient's entire clinical picture. Thus, endocrinology requires really good grounding in theoreticals ("book knowledge") AND the ability to correlate it with clinical findings. This is especially true for non-thyroid, non-diabetes cases like bilateral adrenal masses or pituitary tumors which can be functional or non-functional and are sometimes quite difficult to manage. Thus, if you don't like doing a lot of mental calisthenics then endocrinology is probably not for you.

This is great, just like the rest of the series! Can you also do “So you Want to be a Pathologist?” I want to be a forensic pathologist, and would love to hear what you guys have to say about it!

Thanks for watching everyone! Looks like pathology is a popular request for our next So You Want to Be episode. Remember to subscribe if you want to vote in the upcoming poll to determine what specialty is next!

I’ve always been interested in this specialty (this and cardio) so thank you for the insight and good luck to anyone studying hard to make this a reality 🙏🏽💚

This channel is great. Every time I’m struggling with school working causing me stress, I come back here and remember why I’m in it for. What a privilege to have access to education.

I am a type 1 diabetic that is currently in the process of applying to Med School, and have such a desire to go into endocrinology. This video really helped further my understanding of the specialty and the lifestyle/medicine an endocrinologist does alings very close to my interests and values. Great video!

Awesome! Had been waiting for this one! I’m starting medical school this fall after completing a PhD in diabetes, so I am naturally considering endocrinology. Thanks for making this. 💯

This video alone has pushed me to persue medicine and endocrinology, i was a nurse (who has type 1) on the way to CRNA school but i realized nothing else has called me more than this field. Thank you to everyone on the medschoolinsiders team, you’ve shown me my life path and what I’m meant to be

The short answer for those who don't have time!

It's internal medicine, but you really loved organic chemistry from undergrad and biochem in med-school

Man this YouTube channel is a god send! Literally!! I’ve been been here since that very first video! Now I’m bound to graduate medical school soon and start residency. Thank you for all the work you and your team put into making these videos. We all really do appreciate it!

Great video as always! I did an observership between first and second year of medical school with an endocrinology team. The complexity of many of their patients was mind blowing! Nothing but respect.

A great video like usual Dr.Jubbal. It would be great to do pathology as well as rheumatology, both of those are really interesting to me and you have not covered them yet.

I have been waiting for ever! Thanks for another episode of So You Want To Be!! Although I’m just a high schooler, this is actually one of the specialties that I can see myself doing if I’m a doctor in the future. I don’t have access to shadowing opportunities, so the series has been one of my few ways to be, in some way, exposed to medicine. Thanks again for bringing insights about medicine to dreamers like me!
