Should you buy a Toyota Camry TRD? The Unfortunate TRUTH!

A Toyota Master Diagnostic Technician, Camry Owner and Car guy reviews the Toyota Camry TRD. The supposed Halo model of the Toyota Camry. Things are not good here folks.

The Toyota Camry TRD was one of the Toyota models that I looked forward to the most, I was actually getting ready to buy one when they were announced. That bubble bursted quick when I finally learned the technical details and actually drove one.

Link to the 2GR-FKS 3.5L V6 engine technical details:

This generation Camry is a significant improvement and marks a departure from the previous generations. But the TRD model falls short.

The truth about the Camry TRD will hurt many Toyota fans and owners. I love and respect Toyota as they make fine cars, However the truth needs to be said. This is a disappointment and it has to be said as it is for the sake of continuous improvement.

It is a problem when the Halo car of a Model is marketed as a "bargain buy" or isn't exclusive. It is a problem that the halo model feels like a base model.

While the Camry TRD is a super reliable car to own, other trims in the Camry line up are reliable as well. It will take a very specific buyer to make sense of the TRD Camry. One that doesn't mind the base model features, Doesn't mind the bolt on type modifications for a Halo Model. Doesn't mind the extremely harsh ride for no significant gain in handling.

At this point I'm just happy the Camry still has a N/A V6 available

I’m so impressed with your work and honesty your reviews are unbiased and really there for the help of the public to make good decisions. You always mention all pros and cons of every issue either reviewing a vehicle or fixing a vehicle regardless of your affiliation to the car brand you work for, it’s very hard now to find someone with your values and work ethics. Keep up the great work.

I have the Avalon TRD. Or as my friends say TuRD. Haha. Love mine. A little growl, better suspension, and sporty look. Keeps Toyota reliability I’ve come to appreciate.

Great review. I love my TRD bought it late 2019 50K miles later don’t regret my decision it suits me for what I enjoy in a drive. Stylish car and has good performance and very reliable. It’s a win win no matter what Camry you choose.

I can't begin to tell you how much I/we appreciate your honesty in talking about a product produced by your employer! Proud of you!!

One thing to keep in mind with the TRD is that it has bracing behind the backseat to stiffen up the body when the car is driven aggressively. That is a good feature along with the bigger brakes. If that is important to a person buying the car, I would take that over having the rear seats fold down like in other models of the Camry. It’s important to think about how you plan to use the car before you decide on it. This car in the future I believe will become important to “tuners”.

I have a 2021 TRD and I love it! Look do your research, if you want comfort and amenities this is not the car for you. I prefer upgraded suspension, larger front brakes and a body kit rather than heated seats, a sun roof and whatever other amenities are available. I came from a base 2010 camry so I never had the amenities to begin with. The car cost about 35k so it will be stripped down. I would like a camry with manual transmission more horse power, rear wheel drive and all the bells and whistles but that would be 60k. Or a Lexus. Love it for what it is not for what you want it to be.

My most exciting memories of TRD are from the early to mid 2000's when they made superchargers, factory equipped and add-on. Supercharged Camry, Solara, Corolla, Tundra. Not sure why they stopped doing engine mods.

I've got to say, that interior is right up my alley especially if it costs less. No heated seats or steering wheel? Sign me up! Less crap that can break. My 4Runner has none of that stuff, and I don't miss it! Pretty much every complaint about the interior was a plus for me. The only thing that would bug me is the single dome light in the center of the roof. Having even just simple lights up front high up is actually really good.

Good job AMD. I appreciate your honesty and no one can accuse you of being a fan boy as you tell it like it is.

Ahmed, Great news ! Several months ago a tabled to you about my 2016 Camry. It was totaled in August . My wife and I walked away unscratched. At that time there were no new Toyotas i wanted available so we bought a Honda CRV. We didnt like the CRV at all. Yesterday I was able to score a 2022 Venza . Finally back in a Toyota and an AWD Hybrid to boot ! We are very happy and with todays crazy used car prices I got 2 thousand more fro the CRV than we paid for it. AND we got the Venza at sticker with no additional "market adjustment" . Again thanks for the videos you put out and all the information you provide us !

I really like the TRD Camry look, but I didn't realize how de-contented it was. Very interesting!

great review AMD. I agree with you with the things you have to give up for the TRD Camry over XSE V6. It's too bad they don't have LE V6 anymore, that would have been a nice way to get a bit of power without spending almost the same amount as a Lexus ES350 on a Camry.

Well, the 2022 Camry TRD is my first Toyota, been 5 months of ownership (bought it on Sept 2021). Since the the car is not common in Puerto Rico, it attracts lots of attention. Mine came equipped with the JBL sound system. I miss the sunroof and the dual zone climate control. I love that way the car drives. I like the review, very honest. Thanks AMD.

I appreciate the thorough review. Although I found myself having differences of opinions, I appreciated the points that you brought up. It was enough to let me know that the trade-offs between this version and the xse version are the right trade-offs for me personally to make.

Sad: This car could have truly been a trd car that one could track or auto cross on the weekend and drive all week. The lack of options are actually a correct decision for a performance car. If they reprogramed the transmission for more performance, and added a limited slip diff, this would have been a great car.

I never would have guessed that Toyota would do something like this with their TRD badge.
Thank you for sharing this.

I just never think of a Camry as a 'Sporty Car'.
I think of the Camry as a Sleeper Fast Car.
We still have our 2007 XLE Camry and it is quite fast.
