I love how the Byzantine Empire was still richer even though it didn't make it past the medieval ages while the HRE made it to Early industrialisation. Even the population difference isn't that much despite the fact that the HRE lasted till the Early modern period.

the HRE did not have to fight the arabs at their peak, nor the mongols, nor the turks until much much later. had the geographical positions been reversed, the HRE would had perished like the Sassanid Empire. the only reason it survived till 1806 was because it was in central Europe, far away from any real threat. heck, its only test came in the 30years war, which really ravaged it.
