The Byzantine Empire was founded during the chaotic third century. It was the time when revolts and civil wars were common, and Roman emperors merely lasted for a year.

Despite being one of the most captivating historical periods of all time, the Byzantine Empire is a lesser known one and it's rare to find a page-turning resource on the topic.

Little interesting fact, Muslim Mosque during 6-10th century era feature no dome, but Abassid Caliph impressed by Hagia Sofia and many Byzantine architecture decide to implement dome on many Muslims architecture.

Now almost every mosques we see contains dome structure.

PS: i knew first major dome structure wasn't even invented by byzantine but from Roman Empire like Pantheon in Rome.

Κύριλλος (Cyril): 827 A.D, Μεθόδιος (Methodius): 815 A.D born in Θεσσαλονίκη (Thessaloniki) there were Greeks not Slavic origin.

I understand that the Bulgarians are claiming that there were Slavic Bulgarians but there were not.

We have the same issue with FYROM about the Macedonian heritage and name.

Guys you need to learn to get along with the idea that the Greeks taught you language, religion and history!!!

The picture at 2.47 is of the Sultan Ahmet Mosque (Blue Mosque) not of Hagia Sophia. It was modelled on the latter but was built by the Ottoman conquerors more than 1000 years after Haghia Sophia! The Ottomans added 4 minarets to Haghia Sophia but Sultan Ahmet has 6 as shown.

At 2:48 - It's not Hagia Sophia, it's Blue Mosque which was built on the site of the Great Palace of Constantinople.

Аt 2:04 it is an image of the Bulgarian Tzar Simeon. And the Cyrillic alphabet was first adopted in Bulgaria...

I just have to say that this video is so well done. It was factual, precise and everyone involved was fairly and accurately represented. Often times on YouTube, you see recounts of Byzantine/Roman/Greek history written with an extreme pro-Arabic/Muslim prejudice. I don’t appreciate those historically inaccurate rewrites. As a modern Greek, it is important to me that the ancient Greeks, from which I descend, are represented in truth. I appreciate people who just want to serve up factual information without taking a side or playing favorites. Well done. Bravo 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

Considering they fought both east and west I'm surprised they lasted that freaking long

"Eustathius of Thessalonica ; c. 1115 – 1195/6) was a Byzantine Greek scholar and ARCHBISHOP of Thessaloniki. disambiguates the distinction in his contemporary account of the sack of Thessaloniki by the Normans in 1185 by referring to the invaders with the generic term "Latins", encompassing all adherents to the Roman Catholic Church, and THE "HELLENES" AS THE DOMINANT POPULATION OF THE EMPIRE."
Espugnazione di Thessalonica, Palermo 1961, p. 32

Great job !! Thumbs up, just a small comment; on 0:38 the city primarily was renamed *New Rome* and after the death of Constantine I it was called Constantinople in honour to its founder.

Your skipping of the 717 siege of Constantinople and the 1071 Battle of Manzikert makes this a wholly inadequate summary.

"The second Emperor of Nicaea,  John III Doukas Vatatzes, wrote in a letter to Pope Gregory IX about the wisdom that "rains upon the Hellenic nation". He maintained that the transfer of the imperial authority from Rome to Constantinople was national and not geographic, and therefore did not belong to the Latins occupying was passed on to the HELLENES, so he argued, and they alone were its inheritors and successors."
John Vatatzes,  Ανέκδοτος επιστολή του Αυτοκράτορος Ιωάννου Δούκα Βατάτση προς τον Πάπαν Γρηγόριον, ανεβρεθείσα εν Πάτμω (= "Unpublished Letters of Emperor John Vatatzes to Pope Gregory, discovered in Patmos"), in Athinaion I (1872), pp. 369–378 (in Greek).
