Why doesn't polygamy cause more Mormon women to question the "divine calling" of Joseph Smith and Brigham Young? Especially when they would never tolerate such a thing today.

I tried getting a temple divorce. It just wasn't gonna fly. Didn't matter how often I pointed out that if I didn't want to stay with him for this lifetime, why would I want to be stuck with him forever?
I formally requested my name be struck from the church. No longer a member? No longer stuck with an abusive jerk.

I saw a documentary on a guy, a pilot, who had two wives and families that didn't know of each other's existence. House - wife - teenagers - dogs - cats - garden ... I found that amazing. The thing most normal men consider 'nice to have', but 'stressful to the point of exhaustion', and that fellow had two complete sets of that.

My uncle converted to Mormonism late in life, and decided to make up for lost time by arranging to have every deceased member of our family tree baptized into his faith. My dad (his brother) always told me our family had a tradition of being freethinkers going back to the "old country" (Denmark). So I wonder in particular how our female ancestors felt about suddenly being transferred to Mormon heaven and possibly paired-off with some dead Mormon dude who wanted to fill out his harem.

When I was younger (and still a member), the church taught that all rituals and ceremonies including plural marriage were to be reinstated before Christ came again. Made me realize that whether I was dating or getting married, I couldn't honestly promise to be faithful to just one woman since I never knew when Christ would come again. Weird. Glad it no longer has a hold on me.

Of course, the OT is filled with polygamy, as the most revered of its prophets practiced it with many wives and "concubines". So Joseph Smith was hardly innovative in that regard. Modern Christians abhor the idea, some insisting that "one man and one woman" was the definition of marriage all along. Evidently, Yahweh's chosen people never got that memo and instead received from scripture guidelines on how polygamy should be practiced.
