The most intriguing subplot that went nowhere

I’m thinking the 3-eyed raven attempted to alter the past at some point. My guess was always that he attempted to communicate with “the mad king” and caused his madness. Like Bran did to Hodor. Just think, the way Hodor could only say “hodor (hold the door)” the max king was only saying “burn them all”. It was how they could fight the white walkers, by burning them all. I think the 3-eyed raven showed the mad king.

People have argued about this one, did he hear him or not. I think it's obvious he did. Bran can't be seen in the past, but can make himself be heard faintly. (And, obviously we know that he can affect the past because of what happened to Wyllis.) The reaction of the Three Eyed Raven when Eddard stops and turns says it all. He visibly shits himself, thinking Bran is about to screw everything up, altering the past. Ultimately though it is inconsequential... or is it? Here's a mindblow fan theory: Eddard was left with the word "father" stuck in his head as he rushed up into the tower, and upon encountering Lyanna and baby Jon, he decided the whisper he'd heard on the wind must be the gods telling him they wanted him to become the father of this baby. Hence he adopted him, and passed him off as his own bastard.

Another theory is that either Bran or the Three Eyed Raven were the cause of Aerys' madness. By attempting to tell him what to do with the white walkers, or to burn people's bodies to stop them coming back as wights. But to Aerys this came across as a whispering voice in his head telling him to burn people... which eventually drove him mad and led to his maniacal last orders. "BURN THEM ALL!"
