Firm handshake for the eldest (who he knows is named after him), compliment for the daughter who’s just figured out she's pretty, and some fun and encouragement for the kids. Man Eddard Stark was a true good man, respecting his childhood friend that had a seizure/episode from his perspective but faithfully served House Stark his entire life and lined him up equal to his family members and knights.

Something about this scene is so good in regards to the Robert/Ned dynamic; this is just exactly what it’s like when you go a long time without seeing a dude who’s been your best friend for years. Just instantly taking the piss out of each other and laughing, as I’ve gotten older and saw some close friends less as we’re all busy with life I kind of worry that we aren’t as close anymore. Then you do see them and it’s instantly just like this and you realise that’s your bro forever

Robb/Jon/Theon all smirking as Ned takes Arya's helmet off is such a great little moment for establishing that these people are a real family. They all knew what she was doing with that on instantaneously. This whole episode was strong on that, from the archery bit with Bran and Arya and Ned just breaking down laughing as Bran runs after her, and the scene where Robb/Jon/Theon have to shave. Even the little "Fuck if I know" shrug-and-eyebrow Sansa gives when Cat asks where Arya is feels so perfectly Older Sister Saying Why is This _My_ Problem

As someone with three siblings, the writers and actors both managed to make them look _very_ convincingly like an actual human family, and that takes some subtle bits if you really want to sell it. I remember watching this with my older brother and sister and just side-eyeing the shit out of each other across the couch the whole time and we kept just breaking down laughing and eventually our parents were like "Fuck this, we're watching this in our room from now on."

When Robert said “you got fat” he is not telling Ned that he is fat. He is speaking the words that are in Neds mind but would not dare said it to insult his King. So Robert saids it and insults himself cause they are cool friends like that.

Love the soldier camaraderie in this scene with the “you got fat.” line. You see Ser Rodrik grinning, then when the king and Ned laugh and embrace he laughs openly because he knows how soldiers joke, while everyone else takes it as an insult or at the very least awkward. Soldiers joke as soldiers always do!
