If you actually want to prepare and make your upcoming tattoo session much more pleasant for you and the artist, drink lots of water, get a good night's rest and eat something beforehand. It truly makes the tattoo hurt less, especially in the later hours, and since you're not wincing and tensing up, the artist has a way easier time. Plus you have nourished, hydrated skin.

If I'm getting tattooed longer than two hours, I always bring at least a liter of water, a bag of fun sized Snickers (simple sugars and a protein source are great for maintaining energy and morale during physical stress) and refrain from drinking alcohol the night before. Get drunk afterwards. Your tattoo artist is also going to need sugar to maintain focus for that long. Making art is really taxing on the brain. Bring enough candy to share with the staff at the shop, assuming other artists are going to stop in and say hello. Since you're hydrated, happy and not in a world of pain, you can have a nice conversation and potentially make a new friend.

I've been getting tattooed by the same two friends over the past ten years, so unwrapping and placing a candy in their mouth while they're maintaining a sterile work environment is funny and very bromantic.

My artist did an amazing cover up on me with no laser and two large, dark tattoos.
He initially told me lightening them by 50% would really open up my options, but that if I was okay with limited options, he could do it.
I couldn't be more obsessed with what I ended up with. We turned it into a sleeve that's been photographed for a magazine and that he used for an ad.

All very true though I have always associated 'trendy' tattoos more with the 90's: Tramp stamps, barbed wire, tribal, the dolphin on the ankle and of course Chinese scripture... There's definitely still a 'trend fad' going on in the tattoo world helped along by social media platforms like Instagram but I also think it's getting much more versatile again because of the internet.
