Four Reasons to Learn Unreal for Motion Design (even if you know After Effects)

Why bother learning anything in 2024?

Unreal Engine has a new Motion Design Mode, but is it worth learning something new, especially if you already know After Effects and Cinema4D?

It really is quite ridiculous that we can play an entire 3D scene with millions of polygons in real time, but After Effects can't play a simple, single video in real time. That same video, which can be played in real time in VLC 😲

Awesome video overview! I was a motion designer from 2010 - 2017, and then became a game dev (VR) using unreal engine from 2017-now.

Its crazy to see these 2 worlds collide in such a cool way. And so depressing to see how little after effects has evolved since 2010 compared to unreal engine in the same time period.

I love the way you make your videos! They're entertaining, informative, and relaxed. I was fortunate enough during the pandemic to have already spent about two years working with Unreal as part of a project. Back then, I still had an active Cinema4D license, but not anymore. Nowadays, most of my 3D work is done in Unreal. I've found that the path in Unreal is never straightforward, but the results are always very satisfying!

Looking forward to your deep dive review! Thanks for the inspo in this video. I’m also an after effects survivor of 12+ years of use so I’m learning as much Unreal as I can.

I'm with ya! I got thrown into a job that already is using Unreal and I've had to pick it up on the fly. I'm already sold on it and can't wait to start making more!!

that's the thing, you wait with UE on launch, but speed of render is without any competition.
Now it's up to you to choose which one is driving you crazier

I might be OCD about such things but the out of sync audio was throwing me off the entire video lol still great video and very informative. Didn't think I'd consider Unreal for motion graphics.

Great video good sir! Thank you for being thorough and showcasing your thoughts from various angles, including the perspective I share of "should I learn yet aNOTHER thing?" I too am in this boat and am quite tempted but am looking for the smoothest journey to avoid some of the growing pains and shortcut to the good stuff. Experimentation is always great but if I can cut down on hours of frustration all the better. Thank you for your contributions so far and I'll stay tuned! Please let me/us know if there have been any channels covering UE5 so far that you'd recommend for general UE5 world building or for mograph on it's own. TY!

I love this style of presentation. It's not all sunshine and rainbows, but I think this gives a good overview of some things to think about.

You are 100% correct. I come from an Apple Motion background, which is a bit faster than AE - but no silver bullets! Unreal is insane, and I got familiar with it pretty quickly. PLUS you get to learn how to make apps and games too. I will devour your Motion Graphics videos with gusto! Thank you.

this video comes just in the right time. I'll pay attention to the next videos you publish to check if it's worth it learning Unreal in a design perspective. I use Cinema4D + Redshift and TouchDesigner on a daily basis, and now I am wondering if I should go with Houdini or with Unreal. The part of making interactive stuff and things for interactive installations makes Unreal appealing, but the look and style of Houdini + Redshift is great.
