Dementia caregiving comes with many challenges. Don't make it more difficult than it has to be. It doesn't matter what type of dementia someone has- Alzheimer's disease, lewy body dementia, or frontotemporal dementia- where you focus your attention matters a lot. In this video I show you a way to feel better as a dementia caregiver and lower caregiver stress. Dementia caregiver stress is common, but there ARE things than can help reduce dementia care stress.

In case you haven’t met me, my name is Natali Edmonds and I am a board certified geropsychologist. That means that I am a clinical psychologist who specializes in working with older adults. One day, while hiking a trail, I came up with the idea for Careblazers and I decided to see if posting videos online could provide help to the many other Careblazers in the world who don’t get to have help come directly to them in their homes. I hope that this work helps you in some way on your caregiving journey.

I have changed much since only a few months ago. I am taking care of my wife Eva and I love her and this Dementia was something I never though would come to her. I am a musician and have cancelled my bookings for this year to take care of her. Just watching her drift away slowly and realizing there is nothing I can do has beaten me up. I want to get to a place where I feel good about myself and helping my wife as best I can without putting my health at risk. A very hard task. I cry and don't like this feeling but I believe there will be abetter time again for me and have to move on. Eva has been very mean and angry at times but I
know this is not her. She was the most kindest person to everyone. This journey is not the one I wanted to take. Thank you Dr. Natalie for your wise words of comfort.

So true! You have helped me so much, one little step at a time, your negativity will transfer to your person you are trying so hard to help! You can’t control everything but you can control yourself, patience is the key ask GOD for wisdom and peace, HE will give it to you! Thanks for you knowledge for us caregivers!

This quick video not only applies to those of us who are providing the caregiving for dementia individuals but for others who are supporting those who have other medical/psychological ones. Thank you!

Absolutely no one around me understands what I'm going through taking care of my mom who has terrible short-term memory. I went from being self-employed in manufacturing, to taking care of a girlfriend that was hooked on prescription drugs, to taking care of my mother. Along with my rescue dogs. My life is at a standstill and I have missed the last 7 years. And now i am old and time is slipping by. And the absolute worst is when everybody tries to tell me I just need to make some time for myself.

Thank you Dr Natalie
1 yr ago I couldn't go visit with my ( dad ) & mom without having a panic attack. The thought of spending a few hrs with him even during a holiday was unbearable; he is so hateful and mean. I have had to stop to get sick more than once going to their house. With your help & advice from your videos & worksheets I'm able to do more Be more. I just pray my body and esp. my mind stay healthy so that I can have a time to live and travel like I've always wanted once my care journey for mom & dad is better or over. All his Dr's keep saying " It's only going to get worse. " I hope with the skills I've learned it won't alway be bad. Thank you again Dr Nat

This was so helpful! As I was watching the video, I was drinking a glass of wine and eating crackers. Earlier in the evening I had some ice cream! These are my coping mechanisms which don't work! I've been a caregiver for my husband for 7 years, and I'm 87 yrs. old. I was just in the hospital for observation for angina due to stress. I know that something has to change in order to stay healthy and be a better caregiver! I now realize that I've come a long way in the past 7 years and I have helped other caregivers along the way! I'm going to focus on my success and not on my shortcomings! Thank you! 👍

This is great information for anyone with any aspect of their life.

It's also helpful for me when viewing the caregiver to really see their incredible effort and success in giving a loved one the longest and most enjoyable life.

My care-giving ended 2 months ago when my partner died. So many events happened that I wasn't prepared for and made me frustrated. My career was partly problem solving and using creative things. So I eventually focused on the little wins and realized the losses were going to happen anyway so just get past them. This lessened the pressure on myself and eased the guilt trip. Good video I would like to have seen when this journey started 4 years ago.

Amazing advice! Thank you so much! So easy to focus on the gaps, but the gains r sooo important. I was realizing this the other night and I did feel better about my care even if my mom does not thank me or realize what I am doing for her.

I'm so thankful for this channel This video is right on time for me My aunt was so mean and accusatory last week I wanted to give up. I have made gains in her care and I know she will be sweet again another week. Thank you 😊

Thank you Dr Natalie, I have always tried to focus being positive instead of being negative, of course there are times that occur but I do always try to remember that I love my sweetheart and do my best and I so grateful for that.
