Squats: Should Your Knees Go Over Your Toes?

Should your knees go over your toes when you squat?

When people teach the squat, it is common for them to say "don't let the knees go past your toes".

Is this true? Should you stop your knees going over your toes?

I thought I would try and answer this as simply as possibly. Rather than discussing what happens specifically at the knee, let's talk about what happens elsewhere.

When you limit someone's movement at the knee (or ankle), they will compensate elsewhere, perhaps at the hips or the spine.

This is why you shouldn't artificially restrict one joint without considering what will happen at the others.

For years we have heard that no matter what, knees shouldn't go beyond the foot.
U keep it so precise .

Love the broom of truth!! Makes so much sense and I’ve been wondering whether my technique is wrong but this really explains it

Great video. I’m 6’ 1” making it impossible to squat with my knees not going over my toes. However I do sumo squat (wide stance) to further prevent injury.
