When building almost anything, you need to understand what square is and how to find it. In this video, I quickly show you 3 ways to find square using math, a calculator, or a high tech tool! All uses have their place, and use all three ways depending on the application. Also, the 3 ways to find square go from free basically to expensive...just depends on how much precision you want

Make sure you hit that subscribe button and share the video with anyone just getting into the trades or even a friend that might need help with this.

I will show how to find square with math, a calculator, and finally, using my favorite tech tool. The Stabila 180 layout station. It's not a tool for everyone, but if you layout houses or sites, it will pay for itself pretty quickly. One guy can effectively and efficiently layout anything!

Stabila 180 Layout Station:

I would probably just stand around my backyard finding square for no reason if I had that layout machine. Looks super cool.

Pythagorean theorem is actually a^2 + b^2 = c^2. The 3, 4, 5 thing is a result of that theorem. Love the videos Kyle! Watch them all!!! Carpenter from Minnesota here!

Another great vid Kyle! I work for a small commercial general contracting company and we still use theodolites and builders levels to lay out buildings, but that stabila layout station would be great!

I really appreciate the info, I've always had trouble building cabinets that are perfectly square and it drives me crazy so I'm hoping to try this and maybe it will solve the problems

Thanks for sharing basic building knowledge. I don't have any knowledge of building and I'm planning to build a small tool shed on my backyard.

I use this Stabila also, excellent device. I would recommend checking it's calibration occasionally in the shop using reference marks on floor and walls. I've never had an issue with mine, always checks out but can't be sure otherwise.

Excellent video. That laser will pay for itself by allowing you to create perfection from the start and not having to fix incorrectly laid out lines.

Excellent video . Now it would be great that you could show us how to use it as a grade stick . Have seen you use the laser many times and measure the height of the columns  . You have your metal brackets bolted into place and you use the grade stick to measure for height and mark down the numbers on the brackets . I have no idea what those numbers are . Thanks

Hey Kyle, I just wanted to say how much I thoroughly enjoyed the video. The layout station really comes into it's element when you throw in uneven ground! A similar future video explaining the differences between plumb and level and how to find them would be great too. A simple, albeit primative method that I really like is a clear plastic hose and water to get a level, a few drops of food colouring also really helps to make it easy to see too :)

I'm not a contractor but I totally understood everything you said, especially the part where the grade or lot isn't level and using just tapes will get you close but not spot on. For me close is good enough usually, but if there was any way I could justify buying that 180L, I would. Anyhow, I'm rambling, great video and learned a lot from you. Thanks Kyle!
