Because of the interconnection of all things with one another. ... It is a good thing to proceed in order and to establish propositions (principles). This is the way to gain ground and to progress with certainty. ... I hold that the mark of a genuine idea is that its possibility can be proved, either a priori by conceiving its cause or reason, or a posteriori when experience teaches us that it is a fact in nature.

If I may respectfully interject here, I have found using the 345 method is really helpful but I Go with 3 feet, 4 feet, 5 feet. Not inches. I believe it gives a more accurate square

I always used a 2 foot framing square and string line, I guess how You get a square corner is really similar . If you had framing square against 2 pegs and pull string line in and out to establish right angle on the other leg of the square you can move the line in it out to line up with square and run a 100 foot line pretty damned square. Then take your diagonals measurements and I like your method to check and adjust corners. 3, 4, 5 inches, 3, 4, 5 feet, 6,8,10 . Good easy to understand explanation you did!

what if you are starting from a known point and need to make everything square to that?

Why not use feet to get even more accurate? You can even do 6’ 8’ 10’ to get even more precise.

It's just better to use a tool called a square a lot faster.
