When I was in 2nd grade I brought a mantis egg case in for Show and Tell on a Friday. Over the weekend it hatched, and Monday morning was spent rounding up hundreds of the babies and dropping them out the window. What fun!

Once a praying mantis laid eggs on my balcony. Ergo there were hundreds of tiny mantises on the balcony, but most of them died because they couldn't find food, and some of them became food for spiders

Whatever you do don’t put the egg on the stick in a jar, and punch holes in the lid for air. Don’t ask how I know. Nothing better than hundreds of baby mantis running around the book case

That egg case has an interesting architecture, it might be useful inspiration for future human houses to beat the cold in winter

Back in the 1970s, one of our neighbors bought a Christmas tree, unaware of the mantis clutch inside. 😂

I brought an egg case inside not knowing what it was. I kept it in a jar, when I opened it they went everywhere. It was a nightmare. But they migrated to the window where I caught most of them and released them back outside. I never brought another cocoon inside again.

A few years before I was born my mom was hospitalized with a 107 fever and had hallucinations of gigantic praying mantises larger than the size of people surrounding her hospital bed! They lifted their arms up and she said she felt like the was levitating!

As foster mother to hundreds of egg cases, the one thing to remember is to make sure to wet the egg cases once a week or so, and more often just before hatching. Otherwise, when the babies emerge, their legs get stuck together & they will die. Don't forget & leave them in the house like I did. Luckily, my friend was going to South Carolina the same week (they hatched in my bathroom 😅). I had to make my friend drop them off on the way to Myrtle Beach!

When I was a kid, there were always mantis eggs on our fence, but I didn't know what they were.
But one day I saw a mantis making one. Very interesting.

I love hatching out mantids. ❤ Such cool little creatures and totally deadly hunters. This year I had a few ooths that were taken over by parasitic wasps that ate all the developing babies. 😕

I messed up the hatching process by keeping the egg case warm

I found 4 in my yard this year. I saved them all. But the mantis already emerged. I cut one open to be sure. It looked just like yours. Pretty cool!

One thing I don't get that I'd like some insight on is, How do the mantises develop in those small egg grooves, Do they eat anything in the ball?

I recall having a mantis in the middle of giving birth it seems with 3 babies sticking out of her. She landed on our front porch and was just laying there.

At this points this channel should be “Let’s dissect it or Dissect science”. Love the vids though
